BT Broadband / ZyXel Modem regularly disconnecting.

I've BT Broadband since 2005 (2MB I think, paying ~€46 a month) and a ZyXel Prestige 600 Series Modem (not wireless).

I'm in Dublin 15 and basically had no problems for first 3 years of use (maybe a halfdozen disconnects a year at most).

In the last two months the DSL light on the modem which would normally be green has been turning orange at least once a day(and the other 2 lights either side of it, 10/100M and ACT which would ordinarily be orange just turn blank). The problem rectifies itself in between 2 and 5 minutes.

In the last week its got worse, this often happening 10+ times in an evening. (As I'm a part-time poker player this is absolutely killing me financially).

I've loads of questions to ask to help me understand what is happening.

    1. Anyone else had the same problem?.
    2. From the symptons of the problem would I be correct in thinking that the problem is likely to be with the modem, and not with my PC (Dell Inspiron 531, WinVista, running Steganos Internet Security).
    3. If this is the case would BT normally give a replacement modem or do they have a 'tough luck, theres no problem our end' attitude.
    4. If it is likely to be a fault with the modem is there anything I can do myself to fix it?
    4. Or is the problem possibly to do with the actual broadband signal rather than the modem?

Would appreciate any help or pointers as to what I can/should do?
    AJ

I seem to be having a similar problem since my exchange was upgraded (mid August) .. I'm using a Netgear Router and my boraodband is now disconnecting briefly about 5 times a day. Pain in the arse to be honest.

    > Check "Nailed Up Connection
    > Click "Next" > Click "Save Settings"
    > Powercycle router for 30 seconds.

See if that makes a difference, if not - test the connection without using a Double Filter on the Main Telephone Point.

Then try the connection without anything connected to the Phone point (no Sky, Alarm, Fax ect.)

If after this it's back to normal, connect up each device one by one and see if any of them affect the BB. If so, you know the issue.

Huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh thread on BT at the moment over in the net/comms forum. from what i remember reading over there all the disconnects and slowness where caused from the exchange updates and BT sat that now everything should be ok.... from being on my dads BT connection myself over the week end i know thats a big lie, if i get a 78.x.x.x ip speeds are about 20kbps down, reboot the modem a few times i get an 194.x.x.x ip speeds shoot up to 700kb down

The problem is the disconnects with that connection too, when you get back on it's back to a 78 address. My Dad was going to phone them to get his connection sorted , maybe give them a buzz yourself op to rule out any problems on their side. watch out though you need to be tough with them from previouse calls i've made to them they were not the easiest shower to deal with.

Changing my modem made no difference. Going to consider different service provider.

Cheers, I didn't know about that thread and am churning my way through it at the moment. My problem looks similar and as I first noticed it in early August which would tie in with the other people there, so it looks like the same issue.

Thanks to all for the help.

Have had the same problem, original zyxel modem worked ok for the last couple of years, problem started about two weeks ago. Got onto BT, turns out you now need a ADSL2+ compatible modem. Went out and bought a D Link wireless one. Problem solved. Works a treat now. Speeds are way up to. :) Happy Days

Eircom upgraded their lines (Eircom resellers too) over the summer.

It sounds like you line cannot support it is and disconnecting.

Ring BT and ask to be downgraded to a lower package.
