So what Airline do you think will bite the dust next?

Im going to say it will probably be another carrier along the lines of something like Wizzair or Clickair, who do you think will be next to go?

As a soon to be qualified pilot I really really don't want to think any more will go under. I know they will but the thought of less jobs and pilots with more hours in the same interviews is the worst thought ever.

I think the charter companies are going to be the ones in trouble, although i'm not sure if there are many left as the likes of TUI have been buying them all.

How are Monarch doing? have they been hit badly?

Long delays in DUB this week from them again. Not sure of their financial position.

If you go by Paddy Power then it will definitely be Alitalia at even money, a pretty sure bet as they were saying that they could not guaruntee flights after yesterday.

    Others in the list:-

    Spanair 11/4
    Sky Europe 5/1
    Air Berlin 11/2
A lot of commentators are say that there is a likehood of one of the German airlines going under in the very near future. Could this be it?

    Wizz Air 12/1
Just appeared, did'nt see it there last week, do you know something we don't Steyr?

    United Airlines 20/1
    Thats surprising!

    Aer Arann 28/1
Was only 20/1 last week.....could be good news?

    Lufthansa
    Virgin
    Air France
    BA
    Ryanair
    Easy jet
    All 100/1

Vatican Airlines 500/1 Must be the thought of higher intervention!

And of course Air Force 1 1000/1

What about Jet 2 or Clickair ?

Some of the American Airlines must be trouble , after all didn't Delta operate in Chapter 11 for about 10 years ?

Delta and now merging with Northwest, reduced chance of them shutting down

Skyeurope will certainly go, probably Spanair too....

    SkyEurope are reducing services.
Central wings have stopped flying I think.
Spanair are doing badly,SAS are trying to sell them off the crash las month has badly hi their domestic bookings.
Air Berlin have taken on an awful lot with the acquisition/consolidation with HLX and TuiFly, so that could cause them problems.

with the price of oil tumbling whats causing all these airlines to finish? Is it just simply lack of demand? The whole thing is a bit worrying seeing as im training in this industry at the moment!!!

Oil has been stadily rising until very recently. It's only gone below 100 USD a barrel in the last week - Airlines have been paying up to 140 a barrell before now, it's been bleeding them dry.

fair enough, just say it was to keep falling ($89 today) and stay low does that mean things would eventually recover? It just that there seems to be more to do with it than just the price of fuel.

Well a lower fuel cost will help, but they need to keep the load factors high otherwise we'll have more going to the wall. It's been a very competitive sector recently. Some of these failings will likely reduce the pressures.

It is not true that all airlines have been paying US$140 a barrel. Ryanair have but Aer Lingus have not. Aer Lingus like some airlines bulk buy in advance. Could be 6 months to a year supply. I think from media reports in late July Aer Lingus had made their purchase before oil went over US$100 a barrell.

Another problem is who actually owns the airplanes. Most aiircraft now are owned by big bussiness banks. Mainly in the USA. The airlines lease them. All BA aircraft are leased. I am pretty sure all is done in US dollars. Changes in currency rates, interest rates will all have an effect.

Selling aircraft is not easy in some cases. The aircraft has to be returned to its original cofig. Only changes allowed are mandatory modifications that were required by the manafacturer or state aviation authority.

You're right, but 100 a barrel is still a lot for an airline - it's whats wiped out Aer Lingus profit and pushed them into a loss.
Most use hedging and Ryanair have done this very well in the past, but I think no one saw the price go as high as it has done.
