Do you use msn and hotmail, i think when you login to msn and you have emails windows notifies you when you go to login cos its conencted to your live account.

It means there are 5 unread messages in your default email client. It has nothing to do with new emails in hotmail or gmail.

It means there are 5 unread messages in your default email client. It has nothing to do with new emails in hotmail or gmail.

It is related to hotmail or gmail, its when your system has more than one email client.Outlook comes as standard so if you use gmail or hotmail or any other you have a second one running. Its a total count of unread emails in all mail clients not just your default one.

You can fix it by changing a value in the registry but if you arent familiar with doing this then its not advised to be honest.

Heres how if you want to:

Click Start -> Run and typ regedit
Navigate to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\<email address> subkey.
Double-click Message Count, set the value to 0, then click OK.

You have to do this for each user to fix it for everyone.
    Close the registry editor.

Didn't know it was combined unread emails of all email clients, I suppose that does make sense. But hotmail and gmail aren't email clients.

Well you used the word client to begin with, i just was replying to your comment, but yes ok they arent clients like outlook etc but to the best of my knowledge when you access msn those emails in hotmail also get counted as they update the number in the registry count.

You can fix this for all users in one go by applying the Zero to the "UnreadMail" section of this registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail

Alternatively, you can use these two files to turn it on or off if you are uncomfortable tampering with the Registry yourself.

    Turn email count ON

    Turn email count OFF

You can determine/change that by opening your Browser (eg. IE7) and choosing

    Tools
    Internet Options
    Programs (TAB)
