Upgrading from digital compact

    Hi,

I was looking at upgrading from a digital compact (Canon Ixus 75) but I could not justify going to a full digital SLR. What are peoples views on the high zoom cameras such as the Canon Powershot, which are (I believe) one step below SLRs. Will they give me added control and options when taking photos to a higher level or are they just sexier looking cameras with little substance?

    Thanks,

    Shakeydude

The powershots will give you more control and options than your basic compact, but the price is often close to an entry level DSLR.

It might be worth keeping an eye on developments at Photokina next week, it would seem as if the whole top end compact/bridge scene is going to get quite a shakeup. Panasonic has already announced the Lumix G1, and Olympus and possibly Samsung look set to follow.

Thanks for that, I was thinking of getting a second hand powershot to see how I got on with it. If I made use of it I could then look at upgrading again.

The Panasonic G1 seems to have purpose built for people like me but I am a Canon man :D:D

Out of interest why? Do you have a lot of experience with Canon cameras or were you so happy with the compact you decided to stick with Canon? Or is it simply the brand?

I suggest you have a look around and see what you options are within your budget. I know you could pick up the Fuji Bridge i current use from Currys for about 200 quid and it's a perfectly solid camera, will offer you plenty more options and learning possibilites than your current compact and may be a good bit less than a similar Canon.:)

    "Buyer beware".

Just out of interest, if you were to upgrade to an SLR, would you buy second hand?

A second hand entry DSLR can easily be bought for similar prices to the cheaper bridge cameras.
