Co Channel Interference

I'm wondering how effective a good aerial, set up to receive a horizontally polarized signal, could combat interference from a stronger, vertically polarized signal on the same channel.

I get a good Freeview reception from Limavady in NI. However one of the Multiplexes (MUX 2 with mostly Channel 4 and ITV family of channels) is broadcast on C58. This is obliterated by the local Ballybofey transmitter which broadcasts RTE2 on the same channel.

    Limavady
    - Bearing 57 deg
    - Distance 68km
    - Power 800W (although MUX 2 is apparently one of two transmitted at a lower power level. The other is MUX A which I receive OK)
    - Polarization Horizontal

    Ballybofey
    - Bearing 65 deg with clear line of sight.
    - Distance 2.5km
    - Effective radiated power 500W (or 200W depending on which website you believe. It may also be restricted by 8dB in my direction)
    - Polarization Vertical

I'm using a wideband grid aerial at the moment which I expect would not be much good at separating signals of differing polarization. I know there are a lot of unknown variables here but maybe transmissions from Ballybofey are so strong in any case that it would not really matter which aerial I used.

    What do the experts think?

You are only 2.5km's from the ballbofey tx and you can see it.

I'm afraid short of getting an angle grinder to the ballybofey mast (which I'm not advocating as it would be criminal damage) you haven't a hope.
It will continue to obliterate Limavady unfortunately.
    Theres no mechanical fix.
Your only hope is to move out of range of the Ballybofey tx-preferably with a hill obscuring it.
I presume you don't want to go to those lengths.

    That's what I suspected.

Incidentally, I did come across some research on a chip which is supposed to filter out analogue signals.

Everything will change after 2012 anyhow but to be honest I'm not missing that much.
