i've heard rumours that trinity students get a whopping 20% discount off apple products but can't find evidence of it anywhere. was just wondering if anybody can help me out here! if this discount does in fact exist, how do i avail of it? i know there have been previous threads regarding this topic, but any links posted to a trinity apple discount page have been unavailable...

    many thanks...

It's not 20%, I don't think it's even 10. You need to be a registered student to access the page which I think comes up via one ISS's pages.

    i see...thanks for that...
    so nothing too major then?
    damn...
i heard that there was a 20% discount and it was applicable on one macbook a year and up to something like 5 ipods...sounded too good to be true and i guess it is...

i don't suppose anyone knows how much of a discount they actually offer?

Have a look here though this is not the page you get via Trinity. http://www.apple.com/ie/education/hed/students/

Might be better to phone them and ask.

All students get 10% of Mac products. Trinity students get extra off that again, I think it's 10% of the 10% so 11% or 10% of the 90% in which case its 19% off. I can't remember which.

It's on the ISS website, but you need to be a registered student to avail of the offer. When you go to the ISS website, Hardware purchase, then applestore, then pick you macbook that you want, or something like that and you get the discount that way.

Just had a go at getting to the page. You need to use your username to get to the page. All the links are there though.

NB you do not get the offer if you just go to the mac student store. Then you only get 10% off.

There are usually Apple reps on campus early on in the term or during Freshers week so they might be able to help you.

AFAIK Apple changed their student discount scheme.
The IS Services page provides a link to a page that is now dead, the education store can be accessed here: http://store.apple.com/ie-edu/
The discount on macs is anything up to 10%. The bottom of the range macBook has a 6.01% discount where as the bottom of the range macBook pro has a 7.99% discount.

In the recent change of the discount scheme, all iPod student discounts were removed. Prices for iPods in the education store are the same as prices any where else.

There are contact details for TCD Apple Store representatives on the IS Services site also. As was mentioned before, there are usually Apple reps on campus during freshers week. In the Arts Block IIRC.

In fact I'm typing this on Apple iPhone. I'll probably go for MacBook Air cause it's handy and small to carry to uni from home, although I might wait till Christmas when apple releases new macs; Macbook Air has been around for 6 month.

So how much is steve paying you?

That's a bit mis-leading. You can but it's very difficult to get it working perfectly due to lack of drivers etc and the fact that every pc has a different spec. At least macs are uniform in what they're built out of and the fact that boot camp automatically configures windows to work properly.

Macs are good at what they do, which is basic computer tasks in a pretty interface and machine.

Windows does all of the same and more (and can be even prettier if you want it to be).

Linux can do anything windows won't do (and a lot of what a mac can do).

Therefore, unless you're a total technophobe/apple fanboy/stupid at computers/don't need it to do anything fancy then by all means get a mac, but for your average Joe Soap, get a PC with windows, and if you're fairly adventurous, dual boot it with linux.

I know... I know... but I can't resist a bit of mac bashing now and again. :pac:

And with a bit of compiz fusion magic, linux is prettier than both of them ;)

Agreed, but it'll be a long time before the masses realise this. How many mac users do you know who'd be able to install and configure compiz or beryl or anything else like that?
Or install anything on linux for that matter? Shell commands are not user friendly. Most people don't like using their keyboards unless they have to.

You are missing his point completely.

He is asking why bother getting a mac if you are going to run Windows on it.

You do realise that windows/linux have movie/music-making software, can play DVDs etc...?

IMHO, OSX is like Windows with more eyecandy, and less gaming (though Vista seems to be mostly eyecandy, too). Grand for some, not for me.

Linux may have Compiz but it still lags behind OS X in terms of UI intuitiveness. If I'm drag + dropping a bunch of files onto a folder icon, and I hover my cursor over it for a few seconds in OS X, the folder opens, allowing me to put the files into another folder contained by the original. Genius. In Ubuntu? Nada.

    /me head=>wall.

whoops, didn't mean to start a mac vs. windows argument...

anywho, was wondering if anyone can do me a favour...i need trinity login to access their apple discount page, and as i've not started yet...would some kind soul log on and tell me how much the 2.4 Ghz white macbook is wit iWorks preinstalled (all other spec as standard)...merci beaucoup!

It's €1,079.32, but that doesn't include iWorks. Get OpenOffice instead, it's free. And you won't need it, anyway, even though you think you will.

Also, if you wait a few weeks, Apple are releasing brand new, redesigned Macbooks and Macbook Pros.

All retail Macs include iLife :/

I'm sure Mr Gates wouldn't be too enamoured with your use of *coughwindowscough7prebetacough*. That, and the fact that he's not involved with Microsoft anymore.

The bottom line - Mac and Windows rule. But I prefer Mac as u can install easily and "Legally" Windows (either Vista or XP, as far as i know any version) on it. Where as on Windows it is still possible but it's either not straight forward + it is not "Legal" as yet to install Mac on Windows PC.
But if talking very sincerely here they are both slow as thousand turtles. I click on something and wait for 5-20 seconds until next thing happens - same story with Win and Mac.

P.S. I would hate having Mac without Windows
Hope that makes some of yous a little bit happier and can sleep better this Christmas.

What, it's illegal to run OSX on a PC? I don't know how you'd go about doing that, but why is it illegal?

(I like Linux, because it's very rarely illegal at all. And it makes it slightly harder to play games, so I can get some work done ever.)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 129 ✭✭Jimdw

It's just Apple's policy. Ofcourse you can install Mac on a PC. I would use that at home where only my family and friends can see it. I would be afraid to use that in public places like library or in Art's block, and surely don't ever come to Apple with ya osx PC LOL.
