Has this happened to anyone else before? It's as if the Blu-Ray drive is dead. Has anyone got a PS3 repaired before, if so where and about how much would it cost?

    This sucks :(

I bought it 2nd hand in America, and 200euro is more than I paid for the console in the first place. Rather sell it for parts on ebay and buy a new one if it's going to be that expensive.

If you only spent less than 200e on it then good for you. Try a third part repair place maybe?

Try the "Blue Ray of Death" thread thats down below this thread on the Playstation forum...I'm sure its relative to your issue.
€200 is a lot to spend if its not in warranty.

Read the topic, thanks. I'm gonna bring my PS3 to that repair shop in Bray, it's just they say they'll take 7-10 days to fix it :(

I think Sony would take longer in fairness. how much do Bray charge.

90 euro, which is also a lot cheaper than Sony. Though do I need to be worried about the quality of work, and will they sort me out if it breaks again after being repaired?

I also repair consoles, and as much as i'd love to slander the competion (joking :pac:) these guys seem very solid, have heard nothing but good about them.

I would be fairly confident they will get it right. Replacing the laser only takes about an hour, the reason (I presume) they are keeping it for 7-10 days is to test it. The reason they need to test it so much because the replacement lasers are a bit crap. When you get a good one they are fine, but about 1/3 of them have issues. So better them getting it right than you having to make a few trips to bray.

Its also a pretty decent price, I would do it for cheaper, but not enough cheaper that would make you not want to go with him.

EDIT: I also believe he offers a 6 month guarantee on repairs.

Sony had a replacement PS3 out to me in four working days.

Had a PS3 repaired by the guys in Bray (not my own), and had it returned in 5 days. They offer a 3 month warranty (or is it 6 month warranty) on their repair.
