Anyone know if this will work with the D40?

    define "work"

It'll mount, and you can take pictures. You'll have to meter manually though, the in-camera meter won't work. Manual focus only obviously. Its an old series E nikkor so it's not the best by the standards of 50mm nikkors.

OK, thanks - it'd explain the price.

I assume this would automatically meter?

I know it won't autofocus on the D40, but I can live with that.

A brand new 50mm is only around 120 euros in the shops, id recommened just buying one new

Yeah that ought to meter. I'd go with crazy horse though, just pick up a new one. I think there are some sigma primes that'll AF with the D40, don't know much about the off-brand lenses though so can't advise. Nikon is hotly tipped to be announcing an AFS 50mm someday soon, but rumour has it that it'll be pretty expensive aswell so no point waiting around :-)

OK - i'll look into that. It'd be nice not to have to rely on deliveries etc.

I got a pre-AI 50mm f2 lens for 30 euro off ebay. Mounts, manual focus and exposure but the construction smokes the newer lenses... manually focusing this lens is a pleasure :)

Sharper in the centre at f2 than my 18-55 at f8

€109 in Gunnes I think, though it's been a while! Give them a call and find out for sure!

That's the Canon version I believe - the Nikon one is more expensive (well we do get higher quality ;) :P )
