CV Help: Referees or references; On request or included

    Hi y'all,

    I am just putting together my CV.

    Are they called referees or references?
    Do I include them in the CV or put them as "on request"?
    If I put them on request is it "referees on request" or references on request"?

    Thanks for any help/advice.

    I usually put them "on request"...you don't want a load of recruiters ringing up your referee's giving them hassle. Only provide the contact details once they have come back to you with positive feedback after the interview.

    Also, scumbag recruitment agents harvest referee details. Having the contact details of, say, an I.T. manager in a big company is like gold dust to them.

    If you're not including them then 'References available upon request' is fine.

    That's what I do.

    I prefer to do it this way as you can contact your referees to let them know they are going to get a call rather than the employer ringing them without warning.

    Always on request. You should only be asked for a reference subject to a job offer that you are happy with.

    Not only do you want to give the referee some notice as a courtesy, but you will also want to tell them what job you applied for as you will probably have tailored your CV and interview to suit the role. That means that you may want your referee to emphasise different parts of your previous experience more than others.

    Referee = the person who gives the reference
    Reference = the actual document/phonecall whatever

    I always put references available on request.

    Yep. definitely 'on request'
    The job I'm in now, I had 'on request' on my CV and they never even asked for them in the end!!!

    interesting thread.

    the guy in FAS that I was dealing with said that the person who came up with the idea "references on request" had a lot to answer for.

    considering the context where a recruiter has limited time and an extremely large number of CV's to go through he said it was better to put the referees on your CV.

    There is no need to mention references at all in your CV/profile. If the agency or company wants them then they will ask.

    I think it depends on the job you're applying for. If you're a recent graduate going through a big milk-round screening then you should include them to maximise your chances of an interview. If you're applying for a public sector job then include them as you don't satisfy the screening requirements otherwise. Conversely, if you're a bit more senior and applying for a specific role they you're suited to then it's really up to you. Some of the slipshod reference checking by companies I've heard about of late would make me tend towards leaving my referees on request.

    My current draft CV leaves my referees on request mainly because I'd have to re-draft some other sections to find space in order to to include a full listing while maintaining a complete but clean two pages.

    If your reference is included in a letter of recommendation - by all means include it with your CV when you apply. Otherwise, "references available upon request" is fine.
