Get a 1:1 in your 3-year degree you are currently doing - then you will get into 3rd year (second last) of the honours degree. Including this year, you will have level 8 in 4 years.

I’m from a mechanical engineering background, but my brother did civil in IT Sligo.
He did his three year diploma and then a further two year add-on for his degree.
Most colleges I know of have an add on degree course. Is this the same for yours?
As mentioned by A Primal Nut, you can transfer from a diploma course into the third year of a degree course in a university. As far as I’m aware, ITS has a new straight four year degree as well as the old diploma course and you’re allowed to cross over from the diploma into the degree.

One word of advice, if you do want to change over then it is important that you get a distinction from your diploma course to be in with a chance of getting into the degree programme as places are usually few and far between with competition usually high.
Whatever happens, you'll be in college for five years. Good luck and do your best.

I recently completed my civil degree in NUIG. Before this I got my diploma from an IT. Add on degrees wasn't an option at the time but transferring to a university worked out for me.

Its important to work hard in the diploma and at least get a distinction the higher your marks the better. Once your marks are good you stand a good chance getting into whatever course you prefer.

Good luck on your future career.

    Hi

I have a level 7 ordinary degree in Civil Engineering from Carlow I.T.

Is there any course in the built enviroment that I can get a level 8 partime from? I only got a pass degree so I dont have the option to apply to a most of the colleges.

Maybe Quantity Surveying or Property Surveying

One thing that you should consider when applying for the new add-on courses is whether or not they are fully accredited by Engineers Ireland. I did my Level 7 in an IT. They announced during my final year that a new add-on course was being run the following year, which would really have interested me. However, to get EI accreditation, the first graduates would have to have been qualified for x number of years. No accreditation means you can't become Chartered, so if that is your aim you should look into this.

Otherwise, you can take the route of transferring into another IT or university like has been stated previously. To the best of my knowledge, all the ITs and universities bar UCD were willing to accept those who got a distinction (70%) in their level 7. You also have the option of transferring into a Scottish institution. Many places there accept a Merit (50% +) for advanced entry, and there are no fees!

You could consider going back to redo some of the exams you fared badly in. The reason being is that you can bring up your average grade for progression purposes, but you can't change your award.

Thanks for the advice but my problem is that I dont live where I used to go to college..
Part of the reason I dont want to go to a full time course is that the yearhas already started. I was hoping that maybe somebody had done an online course in some type of engineering discipline that you can get a level 8 from.

I would love to study some like mining as im thinking about going back to Australia as there is no work here at the moment..

Once you have completed your level 7 BEng you will be eligible to enter 2nd year in the level 8 BEng at Queens University Belfast. You will then have to complete 2nd and 3rd year in QUB and you will be awarded a level 8 BEng

    My 2 classmates done this.
We got our Level 7 from DIT, and there is nowhere in Ireland that you can get the Level 8 part time, The North is your only option.

2 years of one day a week IIRC.

Edit - should of mentioned we all done the part time course in DIT as we were all employed in the engineering profession as technicians, site engineer assistants etc etc etc

we done the Tech Cert in 2 years part time, then 3 years part time for the Ordinary degree, so 5 in total to get to Level 7.

I don't think the poster is saying that the course in QUB is part-time. Last year I applied to Queens, and was told that one had to study for two years full-time there to get their Honours Degree. I ended up transferring to Trinity instead and they had the same requirements. As far as I can remember all the other Irish universities and most of the ITs did too.

There is, however, an option to study for your Level 8 on a part-time basis in IT Carlow. A few friends of mine considered it but I think they were put off by the length of time it would take. If this is an option for you, then there may be some info and contact details in here:
