i hope this thread is ok in this forumn. basically my wife got the following text sent to her phone today, the reason i'm posting is to get your views on this and to find out if it's a regular thing for these type of texts to be sent or received. here it goes.

" hi im a male lukin 4 sum fun. i am 23 an stocky built blue eyes.so if u ar interested txt me bak 4 a bit of fun!. dis is anonymous i dnt kno u and u dnt kno me. i picked your number randomly!( no joke) Not interested delete my msg."

my wife and i have a great relationship but what concerns me if someone not as understanding as myself had seen this ,but more importantly what if a child had received this text instead of an adult. also i find it odd for a text like that to be sent to just any phone.

Take your phone to the garda just in case. Report the number and at least you know you have done what you can.

    It's possibly someone's idea of a joke.
There are a lot of quite sad losers out there.

Did she tell you about the message?

Wouldn't worry anyway OP, your wife hasn't done anything wrong anyway. But you're right, awful message that could've ended up in young hands.

If your wife received a text from some randomer, who admitted it was anonymous and he didn't know who he had sent it to, then how is this a personal issue?

Sounds to me like a text version of these spam e-mails I keep getting. I set up an e-mail address for my son when he was a baby so I could send "thank you" e-mails on his behalf to relatives who sent him gifts, and he started receiving suggestive e-mails from somebody who said she was from Sweden, staying in his area at present and would he like to meet her for fun and games! Wouldn't say it was pat-a-cake she was thinking of.
I was amazed as it was Hotmail and I had given his date of birth so I was sure he wouldn't get any spam e-mails.
It has obviously progressed to text messaging, and they don't care who these messages are sent to. Was the number an ordinary mobile phone number, or a high premium 5-digit number probably leading to a male escort agency?

And what do you think the garda's will do?

Yeah I agree - OP, just ignore everything and don't reply. If you get more texts, investigate - but since the message doesn't mention any person details, it is probably a generic message thats sent to random numbers in the hope of a reply.

in order to get the number traced you have to have gardi permission, they contact ur network provider, then its traced. the network cant give out that information without garda consent because of the data protection act.

if you continue to get these messages, then yes do go to the guards, even if nothing more comes of it, the sender of those messages will get a scare and stop sending the messages in question.

But why would the they do this? Nothing illegal has happened, I am pretty they will just tell you to piss off basically.

ah yeah like if it was a once off thing then they should do nothing,

but if it continues, its harassment,

If it is spam then definitely take notice. All you have to do is contact the mobile network operator for the phone (e.g. O2, vodafone) and see is the number subscribed to any premium services. If it is and they're unwanted, contact regtel to get it stopped.

(though to be honest, I've never seen an adult spam SMS written in such a way)

Not necessarily true - if the number from which the text was sent is a 5 digit number (e.g. 53101, 52052) then it is being sent from a registered premium rate service provider. Regtel have a list of all of these numbers so to find out who it is, use their webiste or call them. If its not a 5 digit number or if there is no number at all, call them anyway to see what them can do.

If anyone has any questions about premium SMS issues feel free to PM me

If you got this message in an email what would you do?
delete it as spam, and think no more about it .....

Same as text messages ... It could well be a scam, they just need one sucker in 100 to make it worth their while.

It's spam. Just contact the phone's service provider and have the number blocked. If as someone pointed out it came from a 5-digit number, make sure you're not registered for any premium services. Nothing to worry about here.

I wouldn't even be bothered about this. I once started getting messages from a random number, and then one day he sent me a pic of himself in a full pvc outfit, but not showing his face. Nice.

People just send things when they are bored

I'd say it's nothing to be overly worried about. Ok, so the content matter was dodgey, but really if some random guy has to look for action that way he's not going to have the balls to follow it up seriously.

I remember when my brother and I got new phones for Christams one year. We would've been 14 and 15 respectively. He got bored, took his new number and changed one digit at the end of it, then sent a text to the edited number. As it turned out he managed to contact two brothers from a set of triplets in our school. Our four new phones had been bought from the same local retailer, all on the same network, with very similar numbers. Was it a serious case of spamming? No. It was just a silly experiment.

That said, I can see how in your case it might be worrying. If your wife gets any more texts like it then do report it. But if it does turn out to be a one-off, ye should be fine.

the mobile was beeping for a while so i checked the wifes phone and found. before anyone says anything about checking phones we have an understanding that we check each others phones if the others not around. it came from an 087 number. while it maybe spam or a prank as i said what would've happened if a kid had received the same message would the replies still be the same.
silverfish i didn't know where else to post
