Hi, I have a vista pc that will not boot all the way into windows, When I had XP i could easily boot to the cd and reinstall windows over the old version without loosing data or having to install into another windows folder. My question is: is this possable with windows Vista?

    Thanks.

Should be but what is wrong that you can't boot - could be fixable without a reinstall.

The laptop just boots to the screen thats says that there is a problem starting do you want to run repair and reboot, (words to that effect) it came back saying that no fault was found. so was thinking of running windows over the top like i have done with XP, dut thought i'd find out if it was possable first as it's not my laptop.

It sounds like u need a Vista Recovery Disk which u can download from here and then burn it as an ISO and use it to repair your Vista or do a reinstall.

there is an option on the vista cd to repair , just boot from it and when you get to the screen with the install options there is also an option to repair saved my skin recently when a tripple boot with vista / xp / ubuntu wnet astray ;-)

Hi I tried the ISO that Zorba sugested but that just loads up what is on the Vista install CD. I have just backed up the data, formatted and reinstalled. I did try to continue with an install but all the options it gave me was to format. So it looks like you can't do a reinstall over the top like you can with XP :(
