I'm a 18 Year Old guy with a huge Acne problem and its really getting me down when I'm going to clubs, bars etc and when girls see this they run a mile I never used to have such a problem when i was younger and didn't have this, it's really depressing me as I see all my friends with there g/f's and i think to myself why not me, I have consulted a dermatologist and she has been able to do nothing for me, It's become a problem I now have low self esteem and confidence problems. I actually don't know what to do any more I havn't been with a girl in over 2 years before this started ...

if your dermatologist says they can do nothing then he/she is a lazy twat and you should get a new dermatologist. ask to be put on a course of anti-biotics. chin up lad, things will work out.;)

The doctor can prescribe antibiotics which will work for a couple of weeks. In the medium term try acupressure to flush out your system. In the long term try and isolate your body systems for things that alter your skin's state - diet (go to a nutritionist), allergies (have a full spectrum test), stressful environment (physical (ac, lighting...) and emotional (family situation, school/college)), exercise, sleeping pattern.

This isn't a meical board. But go to your doctor. Your acne, like mentioned above could be somethign simple and treated easilly.

You're both aware, I'm sure, that a dermatologist is not only a doctor, but one who's specialty is skin.

Yes, I suspect they are ... but tbh I too am a little skeptical of a dermatologist who can "do nothing" that simply.

If the dermatologist has tried various options, and they haven't worked, that's one thing, some cases of acne can be unresponsive and difficult ... but I suspect the OP might have given us more information about what had been tried if that was the case.

If, on the other hand, the dermatologist is one of the old-fashioned ones (and they're out there) who tells people the OP's age that "they'll grow out of it", then I would advise going back to your GP and getting referred to someone else.

Of course there is a chance that he'll grow out of it eventually, but no point enduring years of hell if there is a choice.

Did they put you on that retinoid drug roaccutane? Sunlight (natural or sunbed ) helps clear acne IMO but you may increase risk of skin cancer in future. Try another dermatologist and go to a private clinic that offers lasers etc.

There was a programme on TV recently (think it was Channel 4) about acne and in the programme they said that for some people dairy products can be a trigger for acne. Can't remember much of the details but it might be worth researching.

If you have a really bad acne problem, there is DEFINITELY something that can be done.
    It is called Roaccutane.
People mean well when they tell you to change your diet, get some sun etc, but these will be ineffective for anyone who has a severe acne problem. At best, they will provide temporary relief.
Antibiotics are ok, but often they are only a temporary cure- my acne came back worse after I finished my antibiotics. They may work better for you.
Laser treatment is relatively new and has not been very successful for severe acne. Some adverts claim that they cure up to 60% of acne lesions. Imagine spending hundreds of euro and only getting rid of 60% of your acne.

Roaccutane is the best chance of getting long term remission from acne. However, it is quite a severe drug and you will be on it for at least 5 months. You will probably not show any signs of improvement until the end of the course. If you need the name of a good dermatologist, register and PM me, I'll be happy to give you more details.
Acne can be a very distressing skin disease and a lot of people are very ignorant about it. Best of luck.

I had bad acne on my chin for most of my teenage years and tried everything but that never worked. It was just by chance I was talking to someone who told me about roaccutane, so I went to my Doctor and told him I wanted to try this out. He told me about all the dangers of it and seemed reluctant but eventually referred me to a great Dermatologist in the Bon Secours hospital. The Dermatologist there was fantastic and I felt for the first time ever, someone was taking my acne seriously.
I couldnt believe this roaccuatane, it really works so well, it allegedly has a lot of side affects but once you are aware of them you should be grand. My advice would be to go to a different Dermatologist next time and enquire about the drug.
