Declaring work while job-seeking

    Hi all,

I was made redundant a year ago, and have been actively seeking work since (claiming job seekers allowence)... I'm a webdesigner - self taught, and have been approached in the past few weeks to do a few jobs for a new client (freelance obviously) The total is a few grand.

    My question is this:
Is there a way that I can declare one or two "one-off" jobs to the revenue and still claim my allowence or portions of it? - ie pay the due tax on the income of these assignments. The household finances are quite tight at the moment with personal reasons out of my control - wife sick and infant chld. So I'm not really in a position to just drop the allowence and setup a business without a steady stream of solid work.

I don't want to dodge the taxman, but want to know my options in this situation..

    Thanks in advance!

I suggest you ask the Welfare people, rather than the boards.

Suspect that if you do freelance jobs, you would be considered self-employed and thus not eligible for any Welfare. If you could do them as fixed-term employment contracts, though it may be possible.

But as I said ... ask the experts. They will be pleased to help.

Thanks - you're probably right! I'll ask tomorrow

I think you're ok on this. They will know that its only the odd job and as long as you declare it they will have no probs with it. They will definitely deduct a certain amount though and if your earnings go over a threshold you'll be considered full time employed and wont be entitled anymore. But the little you'll make for a couple of jobs wont be enough to tax.

To be honest, as it's a once off and you need the job sekers allowance, say nothing to no-one and just do the job and take the cash. There'll be plenty of future instances where you can declare it if your flush. if you want to.
