Has this just happened suddenly? A one day it was fine, the next it's not kind of jobby? Has anything been spilled on the keyboard?
It could just be that the keys on the laptop need to be re-aligned, or it could be mobo trouble.
You should try popping off the keys and cleaning them, it happens on machines that are a few years old, where gunk builds up under the keys.

Hmmm, it could be some sort of malware/spyware have you tried running programs like, spybot search and destroy? Avg free? etc

Ok quick update I've also noticed that if I hold the fn key down the keys work again! I thought that it might be the number lock on but unfortunately not. Any one any ideas please?

ps I'm using the onscreen keyboard

I'm guessing that there's a problem with the Fn key, or its related circuits or cabling.

Can you get the keyboard out? If I was in your position, and warranty was not a concern, I would: undo the screws that hold the keyboard down, disconnect its cable, take it out and shake the digestive biscuit crumbs out. :o Then I'd carefully reseat the cable, and test it again, before putting the screws back.
