The final piece?

I reinstalled 32-bit Ubuntu last night and everything is hunky dorey, I even got it syncing with my PDA which is a major bonus! The final piece of the puzzle is getting Skype to work. I've got it installed and chat seems to be okay, but my USB phone makes a horrible screeching sound anytime I try to make a call. I tried the test call (echo123) and while I can hear the woman just about, my own test speech is completely garbled. It also makes noise when I try the 'make a test sound' button in Skype>Options.

    My sound devices settings are:
Sound in: VOIP USB Phone (hw:Phone,0)
Sound out: VOIP USB Phone (hw:Phone,0)
    Ringing: default
