New Zoom Lens

I currently have a D40 with just the kit lens.
I wanted to invest in a zoom lens, possible an 18 - 200mm.
I know Nikon and Sigma have zoom lens with this range but does anyone have an opinion on which one is better (nikon is dearer but is it worth it)?
Or are there other lens that might be worth considering?
    Thx

55-200 vr is a great lens and a complement to your 18-55... cheap too!

Looks like a good lens alright. Nice photos :).
Much cheaper than the 18 - 200mm but having to change lens is the only downside.
Have you had any experience/opinion on the 18 - 200mm?

Changing lenses can take around 20 seconds (if the camera bag is on you), but certainly the 18-200 is convenient. (And better VR technology too I hear, and full time manual focus override, faster autofocusing I believe...)

I've never had the luxury of owning/playing around with a 18-200... just making do with what I've got :)

I think that technically the 55-200 has better optical quality than the 55-200 part of the 18-200 (this is what I've read on online forums so take that with a pinch of salt, but it does make sense - a jack of all trades invariably has to fall down (slightly) on some parts).

I've heard that it's much better than the Sigma 18-250mm OS equivalent though.

Here's one more photo from my archives: :)

@Ricky: around 2500 euro I believe in total (give or take a few hundred :P )
