    Hi All

In the last (my 1st) Dublin Marathon, I used the Hi 5 energy gells +. I found them really good, takin em every 20 mins, I did 3 hrs 16 mins. Does anyone know of a good source to buy them? Some websites have heavy postage costs.
Or has anyone experience in the different brands? The bike shop beside me sells powerbar gells, which seem ok, I haven't had the amount I used in the marathon to test em. Runways sells enervite gells, which they say, people who use, rarely go back to hi 5 or powerbar.
I just discovered today that powerbar are made by nestle who I hate, so am thinking of avoidin em

    Thanks for any feedback

    Patrick

Is there nowhere you can buy the high5 gels in Dublin?

I've switched to Lucozade Carb Gel, which I'm finding much more pleasant than PowerBar gel which I was using previously. Seems to have a quicker effect. Widely available, I get mine in Boots - €1.40 per gel, often on a 3 for 2 offer.

    Hi guys,
Not sure where you are based, but Staggs cycles in Lucan sell High 5 gels, bars and powder.
High 5 stuff will also be sold at the Expo.
I use Gu myself as I find it easier to digest.

High5 gels: Thin consistency, 92 calories. Available in Wheelworx
Powerbar gels: Thick consistnecy, 112 calories. Available in Wheelworx
Torq gels: Not too thick, not too thin consistency. 114 calories. Nice flavours. Hard to find. My favorite
USN gels: Very high calorie content. Thin consistency. Cyclesuperstore used to do them
SiS GO gels: Bulky, lowest calorie content I've seen, taste like jelly. However these are isotonic. All the rest should be taken with water.

Do wiggle not have free delivery to Ireland now?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,051 ✭✭✭MCOS

Wiggle charged €25 to deliver my bike recently but not sure about smaller packages.

Just another question if ye don't mind. Taking a gel every 20 mins?! So you would have to cart about 10 gels on the marathon with you? I'm just wondering because I'm doing dublin, aiming to crack 3.30 and taking a gel at miles, 5, 10, 14, 18, 21, 24.

What is recommended? How long do they take to kick in?

Ha ha, I ran my first marathon in Dublin last year and myself and a mate brought mars bars with us :D!

i believe if you spend over £50 with wiggle its free delivery apart from bikes.

I'm sure I bought a camelbak water bottle off them two weeks ago (about €10) for the channel and they didn't charge delivery.

I take one every 45-50 minutes, and plan on taking three during the race - one each at 7, 14 and 21 miles. Only took two during each of my previous two marathons, but supplemented with Isotonic drink, which I'm not using this time.

Practice it on your long runs and you'll start to learn what works for you.

Same as most gels they have to be taken with around 250ml of water. I haven't had to buy them for a while but I have got them in Boots in the Jervis centre.

I stocked up in Boots in Stephen's Green Shopping Centre about two weeks back, and also saw them in the Grafton Street store around the same time. Can remember the year before last having problems getting gels in the final few weeks, hence why stocking up this year (i.e. buying enough for my final LRs and the race itself).

You can also get them online direct from Lucozade (and I'm sure other retailers), but not sure how long delivery would take.

Actually Im in the same boat Sainttoff. Gels dont seem to do much for me at all but I too took them with Lucozade Sport.

Does that make much of a difference? Would it render them ineffective?

As stated above, most need to be taken with about 200mls of water. I would tend to take water at every station in Dublin, and energy drink where available. I think the energy drink is every second station at Dublin. I would take a sip of water after the energy drink just so I don't have a sticky taste in mouth, but that's just me. I would take 3 gels, at 8 miles, 14 miles and 20miles.

What do you mean by 'don't seem to work'? I've heard a lot of people say that. They are not going to make you instantly go quicker or anything, just going to give you more energy. Because they take a while to get into your system, it would be hard to know when they were having their effect anyway. But I imagine if you did a long run with no gels and did one under the same conditons taking gels, the long run with the gels would just seem easier, and as a result you may be able to do it a bit faster.

Also, the first time you use them you may get a slight stitch as you're not used to them. That's why you have to use them a few times in training before the marathon

I use high 5 to help with carb loading before a race but I take nothing but water during a race. I find carrying stuff (yeah even a gel sachet) to be a bit annoying and distracting when I run.... I might be the only one though!

I bought a box of high 5 in Cyclestore in Tallaght for €20.

I also use High5 Energy Source 4:1 Drink Powder. Which i think is brilliant. For me it has made a big difference in recovery.

Just bought a pile of Lucozade sport gels in Boots (Swords) today. I was never sure exactly how much water you are supposed to take with them. But according to the lucozadesport website, they recommend 150ml of water.

Does anyone remember what size the water bottles are in the Dublin marathon?
