Hey I've been reading all the threads about the small screen laptops (well the asus eee) and want to know which is the best to go for?

I'd be willing to spend up to 400 quid. So basically just want one which is the best structurally sound with long battery life.

    thanks in advance.

Pop into PC World and have a look at the Advent 4211, one of the best that i have seen. 10" Screen and pretty decent Keyboard. - €379
The only problem with it is battery life ~2-3 Hours.

Other option would be the Asus EEEPC 901 (not the 900), smaller screen and isnt as nice looking but battery life around ~5hours+. - €375

Another option would be the Dell Inspiron Mini - €399 .
    ~2-3hours Battery aswell.

Which is best? You have to see what suits your needs or which one you prefer the look of.......

Ive been looking at this myself for a while as I would like to get one myself.
Netbooks seem to be coming out at a rate of 1 a week but from what Ive seen these 4 seem to be the most popular

    MSI Wind (Advent 4211)
    Acer Aspire 1
    Asus Eee Pc 1000H
    Asus Eee Pc 901

The MSI Wind gets some rave reviews, has an 80 Gb hard drive, 1 gig of Ram, a 10 inch screen and comes with Xp.
You can easily upgrade Ram and the hard drive if you wish.
Its only downfall for me would be its 3 cell battery, which gives a battery life of approx. 2 hours. Larger capacity batteries will be available in the next month.

The Acer has similar specs to the Wind but with a smaller screen, 8.9 inches, and also has less Ram installed, 512 MBs, but you can get a version with Linux which is cheaper than the Xp version.
Also in order to upgrade this machine you practically have to disassemble it.
Battery life for this, I think is on a par with the Wind.

The Asus 1000H again has similar specs to the wind but is slightly heavier and bigger in size but it does come with a 6 cell battery which should give approx. 5 hours of use.
Also it is relatively easy to upgrade RAM and hard drive.

The Asus 901 has a 8.9 inch screen, a 12GB SSD version with Xp or a 20 Gb version with Linux.
It is much smaller than the other 3 so it would be an ideal mobile device.
This comes with a 6 cell battery with approx 5 hours of use.
It does have an SD reader so you could increase storage by adding an SD card.

Ive seen the Advent and the Acer in PC World and they are beautiful looking machines and if the Advent came with a bigger capacity battery, Id probably go for that.

But at the moment Im leaning towards the 901, primarily because of its great battery life.

You really need to see these machines to see how small they are and as Col_Loki says pop into PC World and have a look.

Well i'd recommend the advent 4211, but that's because i'm typing off one now:pac:. No but seriously, i pondered this myself, having had the original eee 701, i thought it was far too small to be usable, and it wasn't just the screen, i found the keyboard very cramped. The advent/msi/akoya was the compromise i was looking for, fantastic keyboard, and the larger screen, with a proper hard drive. One big let down, which i knew about before buying, is the battery, 2 to 2.15 hours is about the norm, hopefully large capacity batteries will come on the market soon.
I'd advise heading out to the likes of pcworld and checking them out for yourself.

EDIT: Just a question for EEE 901 owners, what's the keyboard like, is it the same as the 701 or has it been improved?

Keyboard is the same, one has to be careful where his/her fingers are threading

I chose the 901 because of its size, battery life and SSD. chip.

Didnt want to start a new thread since this is pretty much the same thing I wanted to ask.

Im looking to get a netbook for college as my current laptop is getting a bit over the hill. Dont care about size or weight tbh(im a big lad!:D) so im currently thinking the 1000h might be the best option. My main concerns are performance, decent harddrive, battery life and a nice exterior. The eee pcs look pretty sweet in pearl white as does the msi wind.
Any opinions on which netbook is best to go for?

Also, wheres the best place to source them? Over the counter or the net? Is it best to stay clear from ebay and the likes that would be selling US models?

    Thanks, any help appreciated.

The Asus 1000 and the MSI Wind both have the same specs i.e.
    1.6 Atom chip
    80Gb Hard Drive
    10 inch Screen
    I Gb Ram

The difference between them is that the Asus is bigger and heavier than the Wind but it does come with a bigger battery as standard.

Your best bet is too look at both of them and see which one you prefer.

The Asus 901 only has 12 Gb of storage if you get the Xp version, so if storage if a factor for you then I wouldnt bother with this one.

I'm in the US currently and the prices for the eeepc 1000h has been tumbling (down to 280 euro equivalent). I got mine for 300 euro.

This is due to the 160gb 1000h version that is coming out to replace the 80gb version. Prices back in Europe may follow suit...
