BMW from uk - warranty

I was just wondering - if a fella were to bring in a realtively new 3series, say a Jan.2008 model, will the BMW manufacturers warrenty still apply?

If so, BMW uk have a 3yr warranty - as far as I know - so if you bring in a car that is 12 month old or less, then you will in fact have teh exact same warranty as if it were a brand new car.

Furthmore - is the BMW warranty pan-european...... ie. if something is wrong with it, you can just bring it to your nearest dealer - anywhere in europe?

If all the above is the case, then it would seem like a smart move going to the uk to get a "nearly new" BMW, would it not?

Ring BMW UK and see, they'll tell you for sure. If you were very stuck though you could always get warranty repairs done in the North.

As far as I remember, from most warranties I've seen, the warranty is valid across Europe.

First two years will be honoured across the EU. Third year will be honoured in the UK and Ireland.

I posted about this a month or so ago as I was worried that the uk warranty didnt transfer at all because I saw someone adverting an 08 520d on carzone with a 3 month independant warranty. Also A BMW dealer assured me that people thinking they had a three year warranty on uk cars most certainly did not. However it does seem pretty certain that all warranties are EU wide for 2 years and that BMW have an agreement for the 3rd year here in ireland although you may have to pay for works carried out in year 3 and then reclaim it from uk dealer where purchased as the 3rd year of warranty is uk bmw only. Also of interest, it appears there is a 5k saving to be made in buying a new BMW 520d and importing it here although BMW dont like you doing that

Under the Block Exemption rule, a manufacturers warranty is valid across the EU.
A dealer warranty is different and you would need to double check with them.

Question 34: Does a consumer have to take his vehicle back to the dealer he bought it from to have warranty work/servicing done?
No. For the Regulation to apply the consumer should be able to take the vehicle to any authorised repairer within the supplier’s network anywhere in the EU. The Regulation94 only exempts agreements with authorised repairers when the supplier imposes an obligation on all its authorised repairers to repair all vehicles of the brand in question, to honour warranties, perform free servicing and carry out recall work irrespective of where the car was bought. If the authorised repairer is not able to service a car which is not sold in his Member State, he will be in a position to liaise with the supplier or another authorised repairer in another Member State. The consumer does not have to re-register the warranty in his home Member State in order to have warranty repairs done. The warranty period starts with the delivery of a car by the authorised dealer. If a manufacturer, importer, dealer, repairer or another company within the network were to impede consumers from availing themselves of the manufacturer’s EU-wide warranty, this would mean that one of the basic conditions for the exemption to apply to the agreements in question would not be met.

Exactly - but be careful here, be sure the 3rd year is a manufactures warranty and not something that is offered only by BMW UK. While I'm not sure of the BMW setup, I do know that the 3rd year of Citroën warranty offered in the UK is not valid in Ireland and I think the same applies to VW. Something worth checking.

In any event, the first two years of warranty will be honoured here.

Third year is dealer warranty but will be honoured in ROI. That is direct from BMW themselves.

Id be interested to know where/who in BMW you got this confirmation. Ive just imported a 2.5 year old car and BMW UK are telling me the 3rd year of the warranty does not apply if you take it outside of the UK. Did you get your confirm from BMW Ireland?

i notice the letter says if you buy a new bmw it has a 3 year warranty but a person buying secondhand is not buying new obviously you would need to have in writing that the 3 year is transferable 2 second owner

I have a 2008 3 Series diesel that was originally from the UK, it came with a 3 year warranty that expires this August. I have had small warranty work done on it back in January by my local BMW dealer. There was no problem from them with regards doing warranty work.

I just got a confirmation from BMW Ireland customer services that the third year warranty will be honoured in Ireland. Nothing startling about this other than to clarify that you dont have to buy a new car in the UK for the third year warranty to be honoured in Ireland (which could be implied from Padraig Mor's letter - link above).

All other things being equal, it makes buying a (new) BMW in the UK and importing to Ireland more attractive from a warranty perspective than merely buying from an Irish dealer given the extra year.

Yep, any new BMW comes with a 3 year warranty as standard now.
