Does anyone know if Coney Island is closed? I've heard that it is, but there is no info on the website that it is closed...

As of Sunday, it will be. But the close is temporary, and it will be reopened after renovation and new managment.

Hmmm, I liked the old Coney Island (the one that wasn't making any money) and I'm much too young to have lived the hey-days but it's still a special place.

I wonder exactly how it's going to change...

    Aww thats sad :(

I really liked it as it was, but it was obvious no money was being made.

They're talking about some place in New York.
I thought at first (seeing as this is an Irish board) that they were talking about the Coney Island just north of Strandhill in Sligo.

It most likely is going to be as interesting as the new Times Square.

What will Tom Waits do? Are they going to renovate him? Or will they send him to Coney Island, Co. Sligo?

Coney Island is not closed - I live here - the only part that has closed is Astroland - one amusement parks. The Cyclone Roller Coaster and Wonder Wheel are not part of Astroland as well as noted City landmarks so they can not be torn down. Denos - the other amusement park is still there - they just recently closed until April 6th 2009 (start of season) .

Rubys bar & Grill is still opened on the boardwalk as well as Many other shops. Coney Island is over 4 miles long the section that has closed is in the center and only 3 acres. There is a redevelopment plan in the works but they are having trouble rezoning several areas to build hotels as planned.

Here is a good link about what is really going - there is a misconception that everything is closed. Nathans- Rubys- Denos- other landmarks are not closing.

aw i loved coney island when i was there, was there ealier in the summer its really nice there. its just really cool.. that cyclone rollercoaster looks so dodgy was in new york for a week and went out with two of my friends and one of them went on it, he said it was really good but scary haha... we really liked the place it was nice to get out of the city for a day and see a different part.. we were so good at that squirty gun game with the balloons we were beating everyone(everyone been like 8 year old kids)
I heard disney took it over is that true at all or is it just a rumor?
the place has a really good feel to it and anyone going to new york id tell them to go out and have a stroll around..

Disney has not taken over anything here at Coney Island. Our mayor Dick Zigun had sought them out to visit their parks and talk about the strategy- their success rate - etc - .

Disney is a complete different style park - they are a hugs conglomerate including hotels - etc - Coney is a place of small entities that are small business operators that come together in different sections of the boardwalk for fun- entertainment etc.

We will see what happens in the future - the zoning has not even passed to change but people have tried to change the zoning several times since 1880 and it has never passed. We desperately need upgrades and maybe new attractions but we should also keep the history along with certain rides - historical games as well. Coney has always been old mixed with a new idea - that is how it should remain mostly.
