he was thinking of the SIGMA 30mm f1.4 ,, is this a good lens ?

it is indeed, very sharp. I think there is a little bit more distortion than you would see on a 50mm on a full frame

I had both and went to full frame and sold the Sigma, the Sigma is a great lens and very well built but was a hard lens to master whereas the Canon is pick up and use.

how could it be hard to master ?

does it have AF with Canon ?

It has AF with Canon bodies but the learning curve on the Sigma was much steeper than with the Canon 50mm f1.4, the Sigma had more shots off than the Canon. Both lenses would not be what I would call super sharp till at least f2.8

I have one that I use on a Nikon D200/300 and it is a good lens but I find myself not using it as often as I used to. I agree it is super sharp from about F2 up if you have a sharp copy. I will be selling mine soon as I plan to go full frame after xmas - but for DX format it is a great lens.

I must agree to a point, as in, I've never played with the 50mm 1.4, but I have the sigma 30mm 1.4 and I do find it tougher than my other lenses to use, can't explain it, just can never get the picture I'm trying to get. I do love the sharpness and how fast it is, though, I'll keep trying til I get it right - in this case, the fault lies very much with the photographer, not the equipment :)

that's something I think happens when taking pictures at f/1.4
not sure if what I get are soft pictures or if they are off focus
manual focusing on static things while on a tripod gives me much better results than relying on the AF-C of the camera (even after fine tuning it)
