In a similar situation, current laptop isnt good enough.

Most new laptops will have more than enough memory to deal with poker clients, as well as HUD, PT or anything else running along.
Same for hard-drive, 160GB basic level today, and unless ou are download hundreds of films and keeping them, you are ok with this. (and even if you are, get an external HD)

The screen size makes no difference, you can't fit more tables on a bigger screen. Its the resolution that matters. I like 15.4" screens as a max, as above that, laptops get heavy and awkward.
Go for the max res you can get. I'm not sure what the current max available is, but I know dell do laptops up to at least 1900x1200

All new laptops will have outputs for a new screen at a later date,
I'm currently, in a toss up between the new Dell Studio 15 laptop, very sleek,
and a dell XPS, pure gaming

The studio, is small, light and good value. Screen res is normal,
the XPS, is very good, but there is no way you will get close to full power out of it on poker, its for XBOX style gaming online, its costs a bundle

Due to cost, im leaning towards the studio, if i had the cash, i'd go XPS

I find this laptop to be good spec for the cost, and acer are, in my opinion, a quality and well-built brand.

[edit] I think with alienware you're just paying for the brand... Just get a Dell insead, they're the same components really.

Similar spec dell would be half that today, they've dropped alot recently. Obviously only going on spec listed, which is little, but 200HD is becoming the norm

Got a studio 15 a couple of months back. Have been a small few teething problems but very happy with it over all. The dedicated graphics card is a big plus too and it's pretty reasonable price wise.

I'd say go with studio 15 I mentioned above,
im about 90% to get one myself.

they appear quite good, but don't have all that extra hidh spec stuff that you pay through the arse for, and dont need for basic apps

    Here is the Studio 15s

    http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/laptop_studio_15?c=ie&cs=iedhs1&l=en&s=dhs

    Start at €559
Even with alot of custom stuff, it would €1000 max,
I went the whole high spec route a few years ago, its not always worth it

I was recommende the xps m1710 from dell a year ago and never looked back since. Its a serious piece of equipment so if your using it just for poker then it would be pointless...paid 3k for it.

For playing poker you really want a 15" or 17" with 1920 X 1200 resolution. The two that stood out for me were the Lenovo T61p and the Dell XPS 1530 with upgrade to 1920X1200 screen. I ended going with the T61p due to the build quality. I got it from a re-seller on amazon for $1700 (1200 eur) but had to pay 240 VAT when it arrived in ireland...

Somewhere a legendary thread exists where there are regular codes to input for buying Dell laptops that give 10% off. Other info like certain large companies/institutions you can claim to be part of and get a discount that way too that's never checked up on, is posted there, Someone will link you to it.

You could get someone to buy you a lappy that has a business/VAT no. and get it at a trade price and then get the VAT back too on expenses out of extra sneakiness.

    This would be my choice:

    The Studio 17:

    Intel Core™ 2 Duo Processor T5750 2.0 GHz,
    Vista Home Premium SP1- English
17.0" Widescreen WUXGA+ CCFL (1920x1200) Display - Good resolution, plenty of tables
    4GB DDR2 SDRAM [2x2048]
    320GB (5.400rpm) SATA Hard Drive
256MB ATI Mobility RADEON HD 3650 - DVI output for extra monitor
    8X DVD+/-RW
    Wireless Card (802.11n)
    2.0 MP Web Camera
    Microsoft® Works 9.0 / English - (Does not include Microsoft® Word)

    Total: €948.99

Get your discount code, then happy days.

the dell vostro is also quiet good - when i bought mine it was in the buisiness section of dell with pretty much the same specs as the latitudes(home section) but for a cheaper price :)
there are many things to consider - what's important is ur processor - 2+ghz these days min imo - bigger if u can afford it - ram - 3gb min fine - u could prob upgrade ram in future if u need to - then good graphics card - after that storage - well if u buy from dell ur harddrive won't be partitioned unless u do that urself - so if u get a 320 and keep filling it up ur computer is going to become slower after time - even sooner with smaller storage space - i would suggest unless u are thinking about downloading movies till the cows come home don't worry bout the storage space - u can always invest in an external afterwards - cheap as chips these days anyway - imo i would try and keep the c-drive as clean as possible for performance .

u could also chk here for an small explanation about what ram/processors and harddrives are all about - http://techtips.kserver.net/education/computer_specs.html - might give u a better idea about what u are looking for , from ur system
i just google "computer specs explained" and that was the first hit - there are many more
if u set ur eyes on something run a google search and check out the reviews on the piece of equip - i always find these very helpfull . and ask around - someone u know must have an idea bout comp specs .

dell prices are coming down alot these days - i bought my vostro just after xmas for about 900 - my mate got one 6 months later - next screen size up - more ram and double the memory for same price .

whatever u buy now just know that in a years time there will be something better bigger and cheaper out there so choose wisely

oh ya and make sure u get a screen with a matt finish - the glossy finished ones that are out these days reflect too much light ...and go with xp if u can - vista is very hungry (for ram that is)and is a poor performer still imo .

hope this is of some help

    happy shopping :)

Buy a dell XPS model - either m1710 or m1730

you order off the dell.ie/epp website and will get 10% off when you put in the field that you work for AIB.....

Every fortnight or so there are codes floating around the place that can give you an addition 5%-15% off.......

I've helped to spec laptops for others on this site so PM me if you like the above models and I'll help you with that......

While alienware are excellent machines the dell xps 1730 has better components and works out cheaper. Plus there are no discount codes available with alienware machines despite the fact that they are owned by dell......

Just a quick question, I cant test this because I'm at work.

How many full tilt tables could you put in a 1280 x 800 without overlap?
6? (I know you can resize the tables but I mean to still see clearly, wihtout squinting!)

    Cheers
    Matt

Buy a dell XPS model - either m1710 or m1730

    this is terrible advice

    lol poor them

as a few others have said you dont need an xps or any other powerful laptop for poker. poker clients use very little resources and any fairly modern laptop will be more than enough, maybe even look at a 2nd hand one from adverts.

the only things that are important for poker are screen size and resolution.
    go for a 17" screen with 1900 x 1200 resolution.
i have this and i can fit 4 full tables on it with no overlap.

forget all the nonsense about xps and other top of the range laptops - they would be a total waste of money

lol - xps 1710 is barely over 1k, the other is a higher price model as an option........

why do people like to be so blunt and try egg people into fights?

What experience or knowledge do you have with technology sir? What makes you an authority to say my advice is terrible?

    xps
    you are wrong,
he doesnt need an xps for poker
why would you recommend such a powerful machine to do such basic stuff ?
do you crack nuts with a sledge hammer aswell ?

from dells description on their site
    XPSTM M1710
Mobile gaming powerhouse - performance optimised for mainstream gaming enthusiasts
The XPS M1710 is Dell's ultimate performance laptop coupled with uncompromised XPS service and support. For the avid gamer and the creative professional alike, it delivers excellent performance in front-of-screen viewing experience and graphics rendering.
