What kind of Mac? iMac, MacBook, MacBook Pro? Those specs could be any of those really. I'm guessing it's a MacBook? White MacBooks were initially prone to the palm rest "staining"/fading so check for that - hairline cracks in the casing were also pretty common with early MacBooks. You could also check the screen for dead pixels - a dark/high contrast image would make them easy to spot.

Verify the hard drive and check the SMART status using Disk Utility.

Check the OS as well, if it's not 10.5.4 or close, it won't have been updated in a while; if it's 10.4 or less the machine will be almost a year old.

If you can get a chance to do so, I'd suggest you try download Coconut Battery for a good indication of the age and battery condition of the laptop.

Disk Utility, not smart utility. It's in the Utilities folder which is in the main Applications folder. You can get to it from the menu bar, the sidebar in any Finder window (try opening Macintosh HD and Applications should be in the sidebar of that window) or by pressing Shift-Command-A to get to Applications and then you can open the Utilities folder.
