for small snapshots it might be worth just getting a good phone with a 5 megapixel autofocusing camera in it (ala the Nokia N95 and its successors). All in one convergence and you'll always have it with you.

I was in the same position I got a Pentax Optio S10 around €150
I think it's awsome (I am a newbie so have a good look around ;))
    Cheers

The Optio S10 is not to bad, if you do get one make sure to get decent quality SD card, Sandisk Extreme or similar. I bought a S10 as a pocket camera, wasn't mad about quality of Photo's. My daughter now uses it as I wasn't happy with the results. I now have a Canon G9, it's 10 times better camera, though not the most compact and certainly not cheap for a compact (more semi compact).

I also use a Nikon D200 and I must say the G9 get's way more use than the Nikon, its very versatile camera, gives you the control and is 'reasonably' compact. G9 tag on Flickr

Argos currently have the canon A560 for 99 euro. It is not the latest model but if you search for reviews you'll find it gets pretty good reviews. It also has what I consider a plus in that it has an optical viewfinder.
