Hollywood star Rose McGowan has sensationally admitted she would have joined the IRA if she had grown up in Belfast.
The Scream actress made the comments at a news conference at the Toronto film festival recently while promoting new film Fifty Dead Men Walking. It is based on the autobiography by IRA informer Martin McGartland.

McGowan, whose father is Irish, said, "I imagine had I grown up in Belfast, I would 100 per cent have been in the IRA.
"My heart just broke for the cause. Violence is not to be played out daily and provide an answer to problems, but I understand it."
21's Jim Sturgess plays McGartland, while Sir Ben Kingsley plays his British handler. The film tells the tale of how McGartland went undercover in the IRA at 16 years of age in 1987. He was kidnapped after his cover was blown in 1991, but escaped through a window.
He was given a new identity, but it became known after he was charged for a driving offence. The IRA were then blamed for a shooting that left him badly wounded. He has since got a whole new identity.

I'm sure they would love to have her join them

Let's hope for her sake that it doesn't kick off again. She'll have to join to save face, just before she gets locked up for being a member of a proscribed organisation.

Yet another instance where the brain-dead use their misconceptions as an excuse to be pigheaded idiots. Seriously, how full of crap can you be? I mean, fair enough; she's in a movie. Well and good. That's a far cry from the real scenario.

I can understand why people would have wanted to join the IRA at certain points in the past. I don't see her comments as sensationalist in the least.

Hopefully McGartland will be found lying on a border road with an air vent behing the right ear soon.

You would be tempted to join the IRA. When people like you were getting shot for demanding Civil Rights. When Protestant mobs, who ran the show, were burning out whole streets of 'people like you'.

The Catholic communities in West Belfast had a complex relationship with the IRA. To understand the IRA, you have to understand the situation Catholics lived in within the Six Counties. You have to understand the position the communities were put into by the government, the police, the British Army and the Loyalists

Had I been born in Germany in 1920, I would have probably joined the Waffen SS and helped in the butchery of millions of people, before being hanged as a war criminal in 1946.

    But I wasn't and I didn't.

I hope that it will not necessarily be in that order, as I'm expecting to be be bailed out by Rose McGowan's AK47 jamming in scene 4, act 5.

You're all veering wildly away from the original topic here, folks. Back on track please.

And RSF Cill Dara, watch the personal abuse. Putting a smiley face at the end of it doesn't make ok.

So did I, but I'd never have sold out to play Oliver Cromwell. It would be like a Jewish person playing Himmler in a serious movie.

That's the thing with some celebrities, saying controversial things for a bit of publicity does their rebellious image no harm at all.

    Producers "regret" McGowan IRA comments
    Thursday, September 18 2008, 16:51 BST

    By Simon Reynolds, Entertainment Reporter

    Rex Features
Producers of Rose McGowan's Fifty Dead Men Walking have opposed comments the actress made regarding the IRA.

Speaking at the Toronto Film Festival last week, McGowan, who plays a femme fatale in the drama, said that she would have been "100%" behind the terrorist group because "her heart just broke for the cause".

In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, producers said they "regret any distress [caused] to people of Northern Ireland and particularly those who were victims of or caught up in the shocking events that existed during the conflict".

It continued: "Ms. McGowan's views were private ones, and as such they greatly saddened the film's producers."

Guy Collins of HandMade Films, one of the production companies behind the movie, said he was "surprised and disappointed by the comments made by McGowan".

The movie's director Kari Skogland added: "Rose's personal opinions of Northern Ireland do not reflect the perspective of the film in any way. Our goal was to present an even, nonjudgmental point of view so the audience could follow the path of an informer with empathy no matter what the politics."

The more she looks at what the IRA did, the more she will realise how futile their cause was "To get the Brits out of Ireland" what a joke that was when they (IRA/Sinn Fein) are now in Government with the very people they were trying to exterminate!!! - so what were all the murders about? and what was their dirty little thirty five year campaign for

I doubt Rose McGowan knows the answer either

Sorry to be so black & white, but any excuses for murder & terrorism are inexcuseable. even for McGowan.

for starters the IRA are a liberation movment . The war was not just a war of shooting british soldiers it is about coming to a final political objective which is the creation of a 32 County Socialist Democratic Republic.the IRA had no other choice but to go 2 war! yes an those in the stormont administration are as much british ministers as those sitting in dowing street. well done to rose McGowan
