Hello all, I drive a fairly battered van so Im regularly stopped by the gaurds, it has passed the DOE and they always ask for it but I dont carry it in the van with me in case it gets lost, they always seem ok when I tell them I dont have it on me, but is it Illegal to drive without in the vehicle?

No it is not illegal not to carry it but I'd imagine most guards would advise you to just to save you the hassle of having to produce it at a station. It also saves us time 'cos we don;t have to check up PULSE at a later date to make sure you produced it.

Ultimately it is your decision to carry to carry it or not. Personally I put no faith in the DOE or NCT cert cos what's not to say the day after the vehicle was tested it was crashed and not fixed properly so it is a danger on the road. Despite this the vehicle is still displaying a disc which only indicates to me the vehicle was roadworthy when tested.

PULSE? Is this the thing that gives you the vehicle history, last time I was stopped they checked the reg and it turned out it was stolen three years ago and recovered, which would explain alot(missing ignition switch and no doorlock!)

Yes PULSE does keep a record of all vehicles that were manually recorded into the system by guards. We can also tap into the Dept of Transport database for vehicle and owner details.

It can be sometimes. Today it was slow for me but that was the first time in ages. If ye think about any minute of the day there could be hundreds of gardai searching for people, incidents, places etc
