my brother's acer aspire one is not connecting to the wireless router. I have tried 3 different routers and it just won't connect.

He bought it in Powercity and I've told him to just return it. Will he have any issues with returning it?

Is there anything that can be done on the linux operating system that would make the wireless connection work.

    Thanks

Any error messages coming up? Could it be a security issue?

Most likely due to the encryption, what type do you have on your network? WEP or WPA?

Disable the encryption for a while and see if it will connect.

We went down to Powercity this morning and they have the worst customer service ever.

I went to the cashier first and was told to talk to one of the guys. I did that and was then told that they don't deal with customer service; that the guy who deals with customer service was out of the shop and wouldn't be in till half 10. I spoke to one decent guy, or so I thought; and he told me to contact a number and that they wouldn't do anything with it until I did.

I rang the number and was on to some distribution company; I was told that I was given the wrong number and I was to contact acer directly on a different number. This person btw came out with the most patronising comments ever. "did you turn the wireless switch on?" "did you get your isp to set it up for you?"

I work in IT and I know about computers.

I rang this person who then told me to contact software support on a premium line number.

I did contact this number only to be told that this crowd don't deal with Irish claims and told me to ring AE services. The number he gave me was un-existant.

we are really fed up now and we feel pissed off. Why can't they just replace the item. It was only bought a day ago.

I will try the solutions with the wireless encryption but I don't hold much hope. It should still work even with the wireless encryption turned on

Their is a crowd in the north that deal with all the Acer stuff. They'll send a courier out to collect it if needs be. I'll get you their name and number later. I've dealt with them before and they are very efficent.

ok here's what I've tried so far

I've changed the channel on the wireless router--no change

I've reinstalled the software ie. factor restore -- no change

I've disabled the encryption on the router -- no change

I've updated the latest drivers -- no change.

I have just about tried everything to get the acer aspire one to connect to my router.

I'm going to explain my situation to powercity tomorrow and see if they offer us anything. Not holding out much hope:(

There are at least 13 channels ...sometimes you have to try a good few before it works...You sound v patient ...think I would be screaming figuratively if not literally at Power City staff by now...Funny that they still seem to have a very mono ethnic ,mono socio economic class staff despite the changes in last 10-15 years ...Some of them seem slightly better than useless usually the fairly 'auld' ones but man the typical Power City check out (girl...its ALWAYS a girl...)'person' is a poster girl for disinterest...Actually on reflection theyre not that bad .....sales staff ok-ish...but the check out girls being the first faces you see ...well ...it can be fairly grim ....Those red sweaters ....and what the heck is with the ancient staff pcs !!!???I used shop there quite a bit but the place seems to have been left behind...Plus I am very wary of anywhere that you cant actually ring the branch...

i also had wifi trouble with mine. Was finding that when i was running on just the battery i could connect to my router but not to the internet. Eventaully found the solution after a bit of tinkering:
Went to Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager -> Network Adapters -> Atheros AR5007EG -> Properties -> Advanced and turned "Power Save Mode" to Off
Works fine now. Dunno if its the problem you're having but worth a try.

Have you checked the bios to see if the wireless card is enabled?

    update:

I went down to PowerCity this morning and spoke to a guy in charge of customer service. I was informed that the acer would have to be sent off to be checked out to see if it is faulty. I reluctantly agreed and he took the machine from me. I was told that I would hear back by next week what the situation is.

Now, here's the thing. I demanded that a full inspection be carried out on the device and that a full documented report be drawn up with details. I was told this would be done. Because I could see it being thrown into a corner for a week and them saying that they inspected it and it's not faulty.

They'll send it off to acer. They'll fix the wireless card or whatever the issue is and return it to you after it goes through whatever normal inspection they do after a laptop has being in for repair. Unfortunetly, these places couldn't give a damn what you request from them. This is just antoher laptop of maybe 6-7 that a technician fixes in a day.

Hope all is sorted when you get it back. It's not nice getting something brand new only to find that it's faulty.

Were you out of 7 day cooling off period for cash refund/28 day exchange for a new one -even PC World (and God knows they aint perfect) provide that much...?

this place is so stupid that their store managers can't issue replacements. It's all processed with head office.

They don't give a damn about the 7 day exchange period.

PEOPLE BEWARE DO NOT BUY FROM POWERCITY. THEY ARE THERE TO SCAM YOU !!!!!

They still have to adhere to the law and you have legal rights if the laptop does not work as it should/is described. Sale of goods and supply of services act 1980. google and quote it to them

Hi. It won't be - it'll be sent off to the service agent (Midia). You'll get it back with a full engineer's report of the problem description, and what exactly the engineer did with the laptop.

Re the problem - was it that the Network Connections option wouldn't open when you went to connect? And was the little image of the two blue computers in the bottom right hand corner missing? Or could you go into the Network connections, set it up with your wireless SSID/passkey and it just wouldn't send and receive data?

Don't know where you got this one from - there is no such thing as a 7 day cooling off period for retail purchases.
