The screen on my laptop died recently and I figure the cost of repairing it would be more than the laptop is worth. The thing is I have some pretty important stuff on the hard drive and i want to know is there an easy way to recover it that i could do myself.

Have you tried connecting it to an external monitor? If that works then any kind of storage media, usb drives, external Hard drives could be used to take data off your laptop. If you can't connect it to an external monitor, you can just remove the Hard Drive and use a 2.5" SATA external drive caddy to hook up your old hd to a pc etc.

A dead laptop screen is usually only a faulty inverter. You can get inverter usually for about €40 + Shipping. It probally worth getting rather than disposing of the laptop. Gosh if your going to dispose of it i'll buy it from you!!!
