€1000 to spend on gear. What to get???

Basically, I'm in the extremely lucky position of having €1000 going spare, so was thinking of splashing out on some new gear, just not sure on what to get.

    Here's what I currently have:

    Canon EOS 400D
    50mm F1.8 lens
    Tokina 12-24mm lens
    Sigma 24-70mm lens (not great)
Sigma 70-300mm lens (also not great)
Lowpro Slingshot bag (not 100% happy with this)

I know I want to get a 40D, but I'm going to wait until they come down in price after the 50D is released, so this money is purely for lenses/accessories etc. . .

I'm actually not that pushed about lenses at the moment, the only one I'm currently interested in is the Canon 100mm F2.8, but I'm really not in any mad rush to get it, I'd be open to suggestions here though.

I know that I want a half decent tripod and maybe a speedlite. Will probably go with a Manfrotto for the tripod, but I'm lost with the speedlite, that whole area seems to be a little confusing to me.

Any other essentials that you guys can reccommend?

Don't know why you bothered with the thread, you don't actually seem interested in anything at this time and moment. try again in a month?

    The Canon 24-70 f2.8 L ... around €800 on ebay..

    or Canon 24-105 f4 L .. around €700 (i think) on ebay..

remember good glass lasts a long time ...

bodies go out of date a lot quicker .. but in 10 years time they
    will still be excellent lenses..

Sorry, I guess my post was a bit on the rambling side :o A bit of clarification maybe:

I shoot landscapes mostly, but wouldn't mind trying my luck with portrait or macro (hence the 100mm F2.8).

I'm good for memory cards etc. . ., my PC is pretty much a beast and I already own Photoshop CS3, also Lightroom and Photmatix.

I defo want a tripod and a flash, and am open to suggestions on these. For instance, I've noticed that the Canon Speedlite 580EX mark II seems to be the latest and greatest, but is this even compatible with my humble 400D? Are there any 3rd party flashes that are worth considering (I really no nothing about flash photography)?

Are there any other little gadgets out there that are worth splashing out on?

If you are looking at doing some Portraits then get something to get the Flash off the Camera & diffuse it.

I'd sell the 400D and buy a 40D. Therre's €75 cashback at the moment and it's not likely to come down by more than that in the next 6 months. (no 40D owners will be trading up given the spec.).

I'd sell the two sigmas also and buy the Canon 100mm Macro if that interest you. It's a good portrait lens also.

    Good Tripod and Head (Manfrotto/Giotto).

that'd punch a hole in it.

    If yo've anything over sell the 50mm 1.8 and buy a 50mm 1.4

I've been looking at the Tokina 100mm F/2.8 just now. It's a bit cheaper than the Canon version and seems to have gotten some great reviews. I have another Tokina lens and it's a great piece of kit both build and image quality wise. Do you reckon it would hold up as a portrait lens as well as a macro, like the Canon would?

Don't spend money for the sake of spending money. If you don't know what you want, wait until you do.

why not buy a 70-200mm f2.8, seems like an obvious choice, and sell your not great 70-300? and maybe buy a vertical grip too?

    a flash or a strobe
a fish eye lens (when absolutely positively gotta photograph every body in the room)

they're a list of grand killers if i ever saw one
