I got the hotel where I was staying to book it for me, they had the tickets there when I arrived. It books up quick so make sure and do it in good time and the audio tour is definitely worth the money.

Don't know about cycling the bridge or if it's possible. Can't remember if there were cycle lanes.

Yeah you can cycle across it. I walked across it myself. Well worth it.

I used http://www.alcatrazcruises.com/ to book tickets in advance. Once you've booked, you can print the tickets. The best trips are the early morning ones as the island isn't so busy. It's well worth booking in advance to make sure you get the day/time you want.

Book the sunset cruise to Alcatraz as the views over the bay at sunset and
walking around the prison at night are worth it and give an interesting slant!

Make sure to book in advance as already mentioned.

Check them out for renting bikes to go over the bridge. The bikes are well equipped, come with maps and they pre-purchase ferry tickets should you want a long cycle and then get the ferry back to the mainland (well worth it).

Book Alcatraz online. all of the tours of the island are pretty much the same but different prices. The cheapest is $24.50 for an adult but we didnt book ontime! Advisable to book at least 2 weeks in advance or you mightn't get any tickets. When we were there (late July), the evening tours tickets were sold out until mid Sept, so if you're gonna go for that, you should act quickly.
You can hire bikes to cycle around. There's a bike rental place down along by the piers towards the Golden gate. Didn't do this though but I think you can rent per hour, half day or full day. You can get bikes for 2 people aswell.
San fran is lovely but the breeze and water can be really frickin cold! (aka San Fran's best kept secret!).
Visit Chinatown while you're there too and maybe a Tram ride.
Watch out for the homeless guy who jump out from behind a garbage bin down by the piers! (Do no harm whatsoever, but will scare the crap outa ya and give everybody watching a great laugh!) If you see a load of tourists across the road lookin over at seemingly nothing...be on your toes!

Another vote for the evening cruise fantastic views on the trip back. They have a few extra shows on in the evening when i was there in the summer. Try and get to a 49ers game. Before the game they tail gate where everybody is out in the parking lot with their bbqs and beers lots of fun. Afterwards if they win is even better. The game is a bit dull but theres plenty of bars around. You can do skydiving for 200 dollars near san fran cant remember what the company was called i didnt book it. Stayed near there for 4 months last year for work

    1) Make sure to book Alcatraz online before you go. You wont get tickets if you just head down there on the day. Plus, it saves a headache.

    2) Myself and my gf cycled across the golden gate in June, highly recommended. I woulnt walk it tbh , its a fair distance. We rented bikes from Fishermans Wharf and cycled to Sausilto(amazing place) and then got the ferry back to Fishermans Wharf. Was unreal

3 years ago when we were younger we managed to go past Sausilto and head all the way to Muir beach, over a 3000 foot 'hill' and back. Should you feel sporty and manage it, at the foot of the hill, by the beach is the Pelican Inn, a 17th century British pub with proper beers and ales and grest British food.

I thought that bar was a mirage until I tasted the beer flowing down my throat.

    Alcatraz.
    book in advance.
if you want to stay on the island a few hours bring a packed lunch as there is only a cafe on the ferry, none on the island. but dont eat it in the cell house or the Rangers will kick your *ss ;)
when you get there check out the Ranger tours. they are well worth it as you quite often get to go places you cant normally like the hospital, roof or the kitchen.
or the night tour, there's less visitors and its more spooky at night.

rent bikes down near the pier.. (think it was pier 19)... go for a long cycle by the coast, over the bridge and down into sauselito for a well deserved beer and lunch... you can then get the ferry back to the mainland... would recommend it big time !

Dunno who I did the tour with as my freind had booked those tickets in advance for us, but the evening/ night tour is highly reccomended. Could have done with a bit more time though as there were a few of the additional tours that they do I'd have liked to fit in but you soon run out of time.

I bet as soon as you set foot on the island, you will here people saying "welcome to the rock" (in a sean connery accent).
