How much do braces cost?

I know this is a "how long is a piece of string?" question but I just need a ballpark figure. I'm a 22 year-old guy and I'm thinking seriously about getting braces coz my teeth have always been overcrowded but it's only recently that they have started to push each other around the place and I want to stop it from getting bad and hopefully get them perfectly straight!

So I'm just wondering how I go about getting them? Do I just go to my regular dentist? Is there any sort of long wait involved? And the big question, what are the average different prices for the different kinds for someone my age?? I have a figure of €2,000 in my head for some reason.

Did you have braces as an adult? How long did you wear yours for?

    Thanks! :)

There's a dental issues forum, you'd get a better response there me thinks

I got mine on when i was 18 and they cost me 4000. But i know loads of people who got braces for half that. You should ask your dentist to recommend a orthodontist or you could just look up the yellow pages. But i'd advise asking your dentist. There was no long wait for me to get them on,I did have to get 4 teeth out but that meant i can keep my wisdom teeth. I had mine on for 2 and a half years, now wearing the rotainer but my teeth turned out perfect and would highly recommend it!

This really isnt a PI, anyway. It really depends on the severity of your case, and often what looks fine to you looks a lot worse to an orthodontist. Mine were very expensive and I had them ages, but thats cos my teeth were very bad, both rows!!

You really just have to bite the bulet(pardon the pun) and go see somebody!

If your teeth are bothering you then just go for it, cost is one issue, but you can claim tax back on them and you will feel a hell of a lot better once they are done, I know I did!! they are a pain when you have them though, and they aren't the easiest. They will hurt etc!

BTW if you are based anywhere near Tralee, there is a bloody brilliant orthodontist there!!

If you are working you should be able to get tax back on this also. Have a look at revenue.ie

I got mine for almost two years from 21-22. They cost about €3000. You're dentist can refer you to an orthodontist. It's a pain but worth it in the end.

i had mine from about 23 to 25. cost 3000, but got back 40% from revenue, it's the med 1 or med 2 form, the orthodontist will fill it in for you.

my guy let me pay in installments or 500 every 3 months, which made things easier.

    totally worth it now.

This should be moved to "Dental Issues" you'll find all you need to know there!

I've braces at the mo, I'm 24, got them on last March, best decision I ever made, my teeth are looking all nice and straight already :D I got them done with Smiles, just upper, cost around 4,500, pricey for one arch, but convenient for me, as it's closest to where I live.

I've heard that there's an alternative available, it's called inman aligner, it's apparently cheaper and much, much quicker (like weeks instead of months/years) - I'm not sure if it's available in ireland, maybe a google or ask the guys in the dentistry forum (if one exists).
