my FUJI S5000 is getting a bit long in the tooth and want to move on to a DSLR.
I want to get my hands on a Canon 450d with the kit lens and a zoom lens.
I've been looking about ebay and happened upon the following:http://cgi.ebay.ie/Canon-EOS-Digital-REBEL-XSi-450D-SLR-2-Pro-Canon-Lens_W0QQitemZ110285907495QQihZ001QQcategoryZ31388QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem.

Is this a good deal? Anyone bought from these guys before? Would I be hit heavy with Customs Duty and VAT?
Are the extras included any good - not sure what make the tripod is, but I know the wide angle lens and flash are probably rubbish. Any input is appreciated! Cheers! :D

I moved from the trusty s5000 in April and bought the 450D. I still think the Fuji quality is slightly better under certain conditions. But that's just a personal opinion.

It's a huge leap with a very sharp learing curve. But the 450D is a fantastic camera. Have a look at my flickr page. The ones from NYC are taken with the Fuji. All others with the 450D.

Buy it from www.komplett.ie - they're the cheapest of the lot, with no duty worries.

    Enjoy!

I would have to say no , thats not a good deal , you are getting the american version of the camera ( american 2 pin charger which is a nuisance to use even with an adaptor because of its shape ) , a good kit lens in the 18-55 IS , and all the rest of the stuff in the " deal " is cheap trash , including the 75-300 canon lens , which is one of the worst performing 300mm zooms in existence. ( the picture shows the first type of this lens , not the III version as listed , so I'd say your getting the bog standard version which is terrible)

On top of all that your paying 109 for shipping bringing the whole thing to over 1000 dollars , and you may get stung by customs as well .... not good !

The komplett deal is much better , getting you the European version ( that means no 2 pin american charger ) and no rubbish. Komplett are not known for being the cheapest place around at the moment either so that should give you some idea of how bad a deal that ebay one is !

Shop around for better deals on zoom lenses , the Sigma 75 -300 apo lens is very cheap and miles better than that Canon one.

+1 .. to say these lenses are "Pro Lenses" is BS to be honest ..

the 75-300 is a bad lens .. doesn't even have IS on it ...

and the 18-55 is just the kit ...

Thanks a million for all the advice lads...I'll look elsewhere for a better price but I could end up going with Komplett. I'm heading to London shortly, would they be any cheaper over there? Any good shops to recommend?
Is the Canon 55-250mm IS lens any good?

Edit: by the way Freddie...your flickr page is class!! excellent pics!! Really like the one of the red handles (on a climbing frame type thing)! Did you take this with the kit lens?

Thanks for that Bilius:o Yep - that was taken with the kit lens. The 1.4 50mm gives very good bokeh as well. Costs around €450 here, but you can get it delivered from Flash Camera for around half that. I've bought the lens and a Speedlite from him. Excellent seller and no duty worries.

    Check your PMs...

It's worth pointing out that your canon warranty is worthless unless the camera is bought legally - i.e. duty must be paid in this country if it is bought from outside. Also, whenever we send canon stuff for repairs, Canon Ireland always want proof of purchase and cameras can only be sent for repair via the retailer you bought from. So be careful even if your buying from someone like komplett-big trouble if it breaks down. And stay miles away from Argos, they couldn't care less if you've trouble.

I'm not saying that the e-bay item is a good deal but I really don't see how the replacement of a plug (easily done) or swapping the cable for an Irish 3 pin one is a major issue that would swing a deal.

This is absolute rubbish. I have a bought a Canon camera before in Malaysia that came with a worldwide warranty.

Apart from the duty issue which is an entirely different matter, it is not illegal to buy items from abroad. If the duty has been paid or not, it is not something that would impact on your warranty and a manufacturer would not be concerned about it.
According to you, people that buy items from a trip to B&H in New York , which a lot of people on these boards do, would be breaking the law and have no warranty which is really untrue.

You havnt seen one so ..... Its not a cable and you cant swap the plug ... and the way the pins are to the side it makes it awkward to use with an adaptor , the weight of it means it pulls out of the wall , you have to prop it up with a book or something , Or charge in a socket extension thats flat on the ground. This is not easily done when your travelling , a nuisance in other words.

I dont know what argos places youve been too , but anyone that Ive been too they replace items no questions asked , they have one of the best returns policies Ive ever seen. Your also talking rubbish about komplett , all the cameras from komplett are EU duty paid and qualify for all canon promotions and warranties , as does anything from any EU site.

Heres a picture of the charger by the way.

Canon only offer international warranties on their SLR lens not their SLR bodies (I have no idea about their compacts). And Canon Ireland afaik will not service something unless it has a European receipt. Canon UK will do the European and International Lens ones again afaik.

There was an article or reply to a letter in AP recently about/from Sigma, they said they would fully service the lens brought legally in Europe, would offer partial support for those brought in Europe but that were grey and would do nothing for those brought in from abroad. I suspect most of the other manufacturers would be the same.

I was looking to get the 450D as well. Noticed it at Dixons Tax free at Heathrow for £425 a month ago but was unable to get it.

A friend of mine is flying through Stansted this weekend so i called up and price is £408 (roughly €518) with the 18-55mm lens which is the cheapest i've seen.

Plus: Canon has a £50 rebate running until October which brings the eventual cost down to £358 (€455) !
