No I'm not making hooch at home. In going to Bath for a conference in a week or so. I have recently developed a fierce and uncompromising appreciation for ale. I was wondering if you knowledgeable folk could recommend a nice pub for local ales or indeed some local brew I can stuff into me suitcase?

and here is a fourm question similar to yours http://forums.beerintheevening.com/index.php?showtopic=494

Here is the local CAMRA site http://www.bathandborderscamra.org.uk/local_pubs_bath.shtml

    Local breweries http://www.bathandborderscamra.org.uk/local_breweries.shtml

The real ale guide is worth investing in, an also the guys on this site maybe be able to give you some more local information.

Just so long as you're checking a bag in.

Stupid air security regulations have made life miserable for the poor beleaguered beer tourist...

    Hi GenghisCon

I received this on another forum, looks like a good one

BATH The green tree tavern , Green street
This place is a Tardis, a little door leads into a series of living rooms where someone built a bar umpteen years ago. This is an ale drinkers paradise. The small bar is covered in Handpulls all with guest ales. And all in tip top condition. Dont look for food here, you might get some pork scratchings but its always packed with ale drinklers...... Its a permanent beer festival

Thanks oblivious! That looks likes exactly what I'm in the market for. Hopefully I'll be able to scuttle off and sample some of their wares. Will report back!

Buy "The Good Beer Guide". It lists the best pubs for Real Ale, by region. It's available in most bookstores in England, and on Amazon.

brave little beer scout reporting back! After some misdirection I found my way to the green tree inn. Lovely little establishment, thank you oblivious! Very nice selection of ales and beers. I also had my first (and possibly last) experience of pork scratchings. What stood out most was their stout; Mr. Perretts, which was far too drinkable for its 5.9% (v) alcohol content. All in all a beautiful spot, quant without straining itself towards replicating the "olde english charm."

I was a little disappointed with the bottled version. Wickwar's Station Porter is great though.

aye...the stout I had was draught and I wouldnt be surprised if the bottled version was somewhat lacking. Its slight sweetness probably would not be to every stout fan's taste. Back home O'Haras is available nation wide and is quite fully bodied. I have heard the theory that all the best stouts are something of an acquired taste and one should be dubious of something that is instantly too drinkable....
