Fear of the front of big boats

Does anyone else share this fear? I am terrified of the front of big boats like aircraft carriers, cruise ships and container ships, this is even worse if you can see the big bulbous bit at the bottom.

If i even see a picture on the internet of a big boat where you can see the front and see how big it is it makes my blood run cold and my stomach lurch.

I also have a fear of submarines out of water (I think its unnatural for them to be out of the water and again they are bulbous like the front bit on boats) and large diggers and earth movers. I think its basically big mechanical things which can move and potentially get me.

Strange that I've found this here on boards, but my girlfriend suffers from this too!

Whenever the fronts of boats appear on the t.v. or whatever, she blocks it from her sight with her hand, she says that the sight of them makes her feel sick. Ditto with submarines, but not so much with out-of-water big machines.

She's never seen the movie Titanic, even the thought of a sinking boat makes her feel ill. Same with you?

I'd love to find some more info about this, I find it quite bizarre.

Well raise my rent, I honestly thought I was on my own with this but no, suddenly theres three of us.
Im OK with little boats like cabin cruisers and the like, I can even swim round them (just to prove a point to myself) Just dont stick me anywhere near the front one of the big boys.
I dont like it when they show large ships coming towards you on the tele and as for a close up shot of a wreck like the Titanic, Well forget it, I have to look away.

That's crazy, I have a fear of shipwrecks, the undersides and front of boats and basically any man made objects submerged in the sea. Submarines are awful, they scare the bejesus out of me. I remember standing near the intrepid in NYC a few years ago and every time I looked at it I felt like I was going to fall over and get sick.

Here are some people I've found with similar feelings: http://www.43things.com/entries/view/635685?page=0&new_comment=2568175#comment2568175

I think there should be a name given to the fear of shipwrecks and boats.

Do you think you know where your fear stems from? I have a feeling mine is from watching that scene in Jaws when I was about 4, where the head pops out of the sunken boat.

I have a phobia of shipwrecks as well

    And abandoned old buildings.

I thought I was on my own until now.

I have this major fear of shipwrecks and anything that submerges in water.
I can't stand looking at deep sea fish the ones that are in the hidden depths, because they scare me so much.
I love the sea I think it's beautiful, but things that lie beneath it's depths creep me out, so much.
I have no problems with sharks or any other tropical fish, I think they're cool.
But shipwrecks or submarines or any such shadows in the sea scares the living day lights out of me.
My friend sent me a picture of the Titanic once whilst it was rotting in the hidden depths of the sea, I was in tears after.

I realised it got worse when I was doing the dishes and a cup fell into the washing bowel, and it sunk and all the bubbles rose to the top and it just disapeared into the cloudy water, I was so scared I wanted to run away.
I'm also ashamed to say it happens in the bath too, when I drop something and it sinks to the bottom and I can't see or find it, I just get uneasy and I feel sick and have to have a shower instead.

I think it started when I played a game when I was younger, you were a scuba diver and you had to swim through the misty ocean and all these large shadow fish and shipwrecks were around and it scared me so much.
    I hope I'm not alone.

yes hurrah other people do to.......i thought it was just me...........or conversely that it was everyone!!! yes undersides of boats, hulls, wrecks both in and out of water....even whole boats out of water for example in dry dock being cleaned or launched absolutely give me the strangest feeling.......as if i want to scream or something but its a silent scream................strange too as i was more or less brought up on boats and loved every minute......i used to be a good rower.....but i do remember once rowing over to a small island near in the harbour where we had our boat and found myself rowing over a submerged (only a few feet below the surfact) pontoon and the fear as my arms nearly rowed themselves out of their sockets to get away as quickly as possible.......i am in my third year at university doing an arts degree and am considering facing this fear and doing my third year project on wrecks/hulls/huge ships.....i have already downloaded some extraordinary images of wrecks and am trying to work out a way of exploring this phobia..............any ideas???!!!

Lisa I just posted on a similar thread about this. http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055276928
I've been trying to expose myself to this steadily over the past few years and have had a good bit of success (above the water at least). I'm hoping to get SCUBA certified soon so I can push myself a bit further underwater. Good luck working through the fear, it can be done.

Lisa I am exactly the same, I have been brought up on boats and I could never jump off the side of it because I was scared of the underneath of it. Even if I am in a little boat and there is a rock glowing underneath me I try and paddle as fast as I can away from it. I feel like iv seen a ghost. Shipwrecks can't go near them. It got so bad that when I was younger I had to hide behind my mum to get to my dads boat or I had to walk down the pontoon and keep my eyes focused infront of me because if I saw a propeller or underneath/side of boat it would be to much. One time my dad threw me off the boat and I swam to shore because I couldn't climb back on incase my feet would touch the bottom / side of boat. Can't handle it. So happy im not the only one
