If you are in college accomodation and a lot of people are using Rapidshare you won't have free access to Rapidshare. If you're using the free version of it you'll have to wait in a queue to download your stuff.

As far as I know a paid account on Rapidshare gets around this restriction. How big are these files? Memory stick or portable hdd perhaps?

The blocks are there for a reason. If there is a way to bypass it, its not something you should be advised of here.

Besides, why not use local transfer methods rather that uploading and downloading from the net?

I have paid for a legal ftp transfer site and i cannot use it. Thats insane!

As someone said, the blocks are there for a reason. Rapidshare and other similar sites are full of questionable material, so colleges rightly have have a blanket ban on them. If students had access to them, the HEAnet would grind to a halt, and affect those using it for legitimate purposes, such as research, e-mailing reports, and so on. If you're not happy about it, then talk to the computer staff, as they can unlock it for you if you have a good enough reason to be using it. If you're still not happy with their reply, then get your own mobile BB solution and use that instead.

The network administrator can block whatever he wants.

Rapidshare is famous for warez, pirate movies, pirate mp3's and porn. There was obviously a problem with a lot of users hogging the bandwidth downloading this stuff.

Btw, I don't think you're entitled to complain about your use of someone else's internet connection, i.e. are YOU allowed use your girlfriend's college connection?

Get yourself a VPN and that could work.

320gig WD Passports going for around 100 euro.

I really cant see you downloading anything bigger than that.

Although i must say, i smell someone trying to get around a rapidshare block and using a fake reason so someone here might actually help them.
To Note anyone that was found to be helping you do this would probably get a site ban.

From what I've seen on the majority of college networks lately you wont have any luck with a VPN. Most of them are using VPN a the connection method.
