    Hello

I read this post but I reckon I need some more help.

I am looking to buy a camera which would be suitable for taking pictures of people on the street and in bars. The pictures do not need to be huge - they will be displayed in a website sort of like this: http://www.dlisted.com/node/28170

Idealy I would like a camera which can take a quick succession of pictures, is beginner friendly (I'm a beginner), and which will allow me to quickly take photos with minimal fuss. It needs to be a durable camera.

Budget - under 1k but preferably around (or under) €500.

    Thank you for reading.

For shots of bars n pubs you'll need a camera with a high ISO and low noise levels, ISO being how sensitive to light the cameras sensor is.

Might need something wider than a 50mm lens though. Everything will be kind of claustrophobic looking like this:

With a wider lens you can squeeze a lot of people into the shot like this:

    But a 50mm is a good start....

I would think that a Canon G9 would be a good choice.

I recenrly got a beating on another website for disagreeing that a rangefinder leica was the only thing you could use for street photography... Im glad to see we're not muppety fanboys on boards.ie photography.

    But yeah a 1.8 50mm or maybe 35mm

Check the photography section on adverts.ie for second hand stuff. I think photographyireland.net has a buy & sell section too.

With a crop camera (1.6) a 50mm is really too long. Good to have though for the odd shot. Something in the range 24mm to 35mm is better imo. Not easy to get hold of second hand though.

Thanks everyone. I've been researching this a bit more.

In your expert (and amateur!) opinions, what sort of camera was used to take this photo?

    http://www.viceland.com/int/dd.php?id=1611

That is roughly the kind of thing I'll need the camera for.

    Thank you!

PS I'm a moron when it comes to photography, so please use plain English if possible :o

You should maybe consider a decent (affordable) walkabout lens.

I recently got a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 (€260 eBay), or there's also the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 to consider. Either of those should allow you to get as close to/far from the action as you need.

Then you only need to decide on a body to mount it! A Second hand 400D would work. :)

I'd recommend the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3. Lots of semi-professional people seem to be buying them to use for street photography. I bought one to bring on hoidays with me, used it more often than my D-SLR in the end I reckon.

Here's a group on flickr where you can see some pics taken with this camera, and here's some reviews of it.

You might also check out the new Canon Powershot G10 ... :o

Any kit lens (lens that comes with your SLR pack if you decide to go this route, 18-55+) will give you that sort of view

They aren't too good on aperture (which from the sounds of what you want to do will be important); so as others have said, you are looking for either a low noise at high ISO-capable body, or a bright wide lens, neither of which are particularly cheap considering your budget

On the terms, familiarise yourself with what aperture and ISO mean, and how they work: this should equip you to make better sense of it when you're browsing
