I see my 6 mix has increased this month from €68.87 to €71 :(

Are we being rightly screwed on this side of the water ? I notice from this http://www.sky.com/Assets/PDF/StaticFiles/4396810.pdf, that the UK 6 mix costs £47. I just did a quick check and this converts to €59.......€12 seems a helluva difference.

Anyone know what the justification for the price difference is ? (apologies if this has been discussed already, but i did look over the first 3 or 4 pages and didn't see it)

Its because of the higher cost of doing business in Ireland with higher ESB, Gas, Oil and wage costs. Oh wait a bloody minute, seeing as they just beam a satellite signal down here, the usual bullsh!t excuses don't apply.

Yup guess you're right, they're just screw!ng poor old Paddy.

at £47 per month in euro at todays rate of .803 that would equate to €58.53 a month. So sky are making an extra 13 euro per month per subscriber on sky world in ireland. the rate sky are charging makes the euro worth only 66 pence.

66 pence was the euro/sterling rate up till 2 months ago since when sterling has taken a nose dive against dollar & euro.
Should Sky increase or decrease their charges here on monthly basis because of currency fluctuations?
I don't think so, it would be a logistical nightmare and piss off customers too.

Exactly , I am sure if it was the euro that noise dived we would have no increase here.....

Anyway, it's not like they changed the price upwards here the last two months or anything.....

Sorry without wishing to get into a row about Foreign Exchange, but Sterling has been weak against the Euro for almost a year now. It took a further tumble in the last month or so. A fella I work with sends money home to the UK each month and he has been a happy camper for a long time as he gets a lot more sterling than he used too. Rest assured if the Euro did tumble below 66p, Sky would raise their rates, logistical nightmare or piss off customers would not matter to them. Here is a link to a story from January this year, 8 months ago.

What really pissed me off is that Sky have gained an extra 12 euro or so a month from Irish subscribers because of currency fluctuations but still had the cheek to put up their prices from September onwards. Greedy B*****ds!

There are far too many companies taking advantage of Irish customers now that the Euro has improved. Why should they get away with a bonus from us now that the tide has turned?
For far too long, especially those of us in border areas, we've been made to feel like second class shoppers/consumers and have been heavily penalised for the pleasure of handing over our 'funny' money.
Is it not illegal to charge more for goods or services under these circumstances purely on the basis of a faulty conversion? I'm thinking not just of Sky, but of other UK companies and retail outlets that are benefiting hugely from a currency conversion that is way out of date. Are we allowed to name and shame on these boards?

    It should be illegal!

I am pretty sure that they set up the Irish call centre and so on in order to justify the extra costs.

    Morale of the story.....

    Cancel sky (I did)
Shop on UK internet sites & pay in sterling, not their rediculous euro eqivalent (I do)
If you live close enough to the N Ireland border, every 2 months or so, drive across the border and do a shop there. (I do)

You'll be surprised the savings that can be made driving up north, especially on booze. I stocked up on 24 cans of carlsberg last time in Asda at £9.99 each (€13) and a few bottles of 1L smirnoff vodka at £11.99 (€14.50).

Just those few items paid my petrol, the rest of the shopping just pure savings and a day out to boot!!

This is what I usually do, but I buy from an internet photo dealer, where you upload all your photos into albums, and they automatically price my basket in Euros at the WORST possible rate. I've been on to them several times, but no joy - I've stopped ordering but it infuriates me that on an order of say £10 sterling, the Euro price is €15.78  This is extortionate.
I would really like to warn Irish customers about this firm, but I'm not sure if I can name them here on the site. There is absolutely no reason for that price differential - after all, your photos are not invested in by this firm in advance - no stock purchased prior to the currency changes, no Irish centre to maintain, no other increases to account for. They are simply creaming it as a result of the currency differential - a current bonus of approximately £2.50 on every £10 spent with them

Totally off topic but relevant to the last post - I had to shout at a petrol station in Antrim Town (nowhere near the border) for converting my fuel to Euro before charging it to my card - they were going to make €3 clear profit on that conversion based on what it eventually came through as. Luckily I caught it...

i live in laois and go to the north every so often. better value all round and as long as we keep paying these companies including sly they,ll keep uping the prices. i see the price of petrol and disel has plummetted per barrel and at the pumps, my bollxxxs has it. remember one thing WE,RE THE FOOLS. DON,T PAY OVER THE ODDS.

It is worthwhile complaining to Sky. I wrote a letter on this exact issue. The people who replied said that they were not aware that there was such a difference. I'm sure that someone up high in the accounts department is well aware and is delighted. The more people who complain to sky the better the chance that something will be done about it. They gave me a free months viewing so write into them and see what they say!

I'd think this is something that should be raised on Joe Duffy, etc.

Real widespread public attention would likely get Sky to change their tune.
In particular focus on the fact that they have increased the prices, despite the exchange rate.

It would make for a good ripoff Ireland story, it is a clear example and Sky can't really argue higher oerating expenses here as most of their operations are based in the UK.

True, they don't have Grainne Seioge on the books any more either - so the incentive to pay the extra Eur13.00 is not there! :D:D:D

ive been looking at the various websites at prices. Its shocking what we are paying. Im toying with the idea of a sky sub once again but at the moment no way. Im after HD, but even that carries an extra charge of 15e.

Perhaps we are paying extra for the RTE bonus mix!!!! Paying twice to watch RTe is a joke, Licence and then sky sub. When my transmitter is turned off (Which they are going to do,many transmitters in MAyo have already been switched off) I wont have access to Irish channels. Surely thats all wrong?

the euro is now worth 86.07 as of tonight against sterling. remeber at one stage it was 67pence. a full 19p in the difference.. yet sky have increased not reduced their price. A scandal or what??

I asked about their conversion rate mentioning I wasn't a happy camper having to pay over the odds compared to UK customers and got a reply about 6 weeks later as follows:

    Dear Mr. XXXXXXXXX

    Customer Account Number : ************

Thank you for your email addressed to Jeremy Darroch. I have been asked to investigate and respond on his behalf.

Please accept my apologies for the lack of response you have had to your previous query. This is not the level of service we aim for, or that our customers deserve.

I note your comments about the cost of your Sky World package. I must advise that this is calculated on a fixed conversation rate, and is not variable like the exchange rate. It may be that the strength of the Euro will be taken into consideration when the pricing structure is next reviewed, but I cannot say for definite. I will, however, forward your observations onto the relevant area of the business.

Please let me know if you wish to amend your viewing package. They range from 21.00 (EUR0) right up to 71.00(EURO).

I’m sorry I could not be of assistance at this time. Should you need any assistance in the future, please contact me on the details shown.

    Yours sincerely

    **** ********

    Customer Relations

I see from their reply that they don't give a **** as long as the conversion rate works in there favour. they basically told me to amend my subscription or cancel if I don't like it. Great customer service

I guess the best thing to do would be to switch your subs to a UK sub and pay with a credit card. As long as you have a UK address!

Not a bad idea, Wonder how easy it is? Ive a UK bank account which transfering money to is very handy via online banking. never thought of that. Plus you'll have the full UK EPG.

The Irish Sub is a disgrace anyway, 21e for the 4 Irish channels (When ITVs are FTA anyhow)

I packed SKY in during the summer, mainly due to the leaves on my neighbours trees. I was paying them over €60 a month.
I have reception again now that the leaves are gone and I'm watching Scotland play Georgia in rugby on BBC Alba FTA right now you won't get that on SKY, 50 - 3 to Scotland with 20 mins to go. :)

Write a letter , call them and if you are still not happy walk away, cancel it. We have a rip off culture here because far too many people winge and moan but dont do anything.
