Group of us are looking to go skiing in Chamonix. We've heard mixed reviews. Heard that it's great fun but that it takes a 45mins bus trip from town centre to ski lifts.

We are looking at staying in Hotel Gustavia - any reviews?

I went skiing there last christmas and really enjoyed it. There are about 5 different places you can go skiing there. Theres 2 places fairly close to the town maybe 10/20 minutes walk to the lifts, depends where your staying. There are lots of regular buses than go around the town to the lifts.
Then there are a couple more places to ski slightly further away, cant remember the names but they take about 30/45 minutes to get to. There is a train which runs up and down the valley that we used most days.
If you had a big group you could hire a car/mini bus would be perfect for getting to resorts.

Skiing is quite good around chamonix and is high altitude so there nearly always snow. Plus with all the different places to ski no day has to be the same.

You can also ski to italy if your very adventerous

    Hi,

Chamonix? What level of boarders are you?
It is amazing for experienced (offpiste) boarders - not so hot for beginners compared with perhaps Trois Vallees.

Yes - from the Gustavia it will be a bit of a trek to the slopes....
Nearest one is Brevent across town - a 20 minute walk including a big hill - I believe you can catch a bus from directly outside the Gustavia though....

It will take you 20-30 minutes by bus up to Grands Montets for the best and most extensive offpiste in the valley - however buses get very busy -

On the other hand, you are opposite the train station, and with the Carte D'Hote or Ski Pass - you should have free transport on the train too! There you have options to get to Argentiere for Grand Montets, or Vallorcine for La Tour which has lots of easier boarding (and great offpiste at the back - though beware as these slopes are the most avalanche prone). (in Vallorcine, the train stops right by the new lift station!!!)... I'd definitely advise train rather than bus if possible.

You are approx. 20-30 minutes bus from Les Houches - easier runs, in the trees which is great on windy or poor visability days - Les Houches is where we are located - and has a few ski-in ski-out chalets in Chamonix valley. Typically quieter than Chamonix, Les Houches has invested lots in infrastructure in the last few years - making the slopes quicker and easier to get to. When Chamonix is rammed in February - Les Houches is a better bet. Again, you can get there by train - 10 minutes - and Les houches runs a shuttle bus from the train station to the lift.

The Gustavia is lively - joined to the bar Chambre Neuf which is one of the lively spots in cham - GREAT (loud) Bands play there often.... dancing on the tables... swedish blokes, occasional swedish girls.. Nice spot, very easy to get into town for the nightlife as it is on the outskirts of the town centre!

    hope this helps,
    Leighton.
