Im planning on buying an airport extreme and a usb hub so that i can have my two (self powered) external hdd's and canon printer/scanner wirelessly networked.

going through the irish apple store it will work out about 200ish
however... would it be possible to buy an applestore giftcard for the us store, availing of the exchange rate and their prices, and get it for about 70 euro cheaper? Do you think i could get away with that? or would i be liable for customs tax or headaches regarding support from apple for the airport in the future should problems arise?

Won't work, the U.S. store doesn't deliver outside the U.S..

Your only real option is for someone traveling to the US to pick one up for you if you want the savings (most likely to avoid customs that way too). As Sad Professor said, the US store will not ship outside the US...
