Try uninstalling the USB drivers in Device Manager, reboot and reconnect - should automatically reinstall.

I did that there now and when i turned the laptop back on it said reinstalling drivers and said installed successfully. But then it came back up saying usb not recgonised?

This might be a long shot, but after uninstalling the USB drivers, you should switch off all power, including any battery in a laptop, for 30 minutes before rebooting and reinstalling. Something to do with power to the motherboard and allowing residual current to discharge.

Did some more research on this - it seems 30 SECONDS is enough - oops, sorry! Also, the power to your laptop may not stop, even without the main battery, so it may be necessary to hold down the power button for 30 seconds to make sure.
One more thing, make sure your laptop has fully loaded everything before reconnecting the USB - apparently this can actually cause the problem in the first place. I sure hope this works for you!

What Os are you running on your laptop. Had the same issue with a PC once after a vanilla re install of XP Pro. USB worked for the first week but then the PC decided that it had amnesia and didn't recognise the USB ports any more.
It was only after I applied SP2, that the issue solved itself.

Have you downloaded any updates lately?

Sorry it didn't work for you - hope you managed at the presentation. If you haven't downloaded/installed any Windows updates recently, maybe you need to check it out? Also, I assume that your USB worked on your Vista laptop before now?
Have a look at this site to see if anything on it can help http://207.46.197.98/Windows/en-US/help/c39bd203-f729-47a4-8351-83291e13c8a81033.mspx
