I had 2 primary partitons but deleted the second one and now its unallocated space. I want to add that to the first partition but Im not sure how? Do I have to format the unallocated space?

you have to convert the disk from basic to dynamic, and then extend the volume once it's converted. dynamic disks are not supported in laptops....this is for xp by the way, not sure about vista.....

One solution would be to use GParted.

Just get the live cd version.

does gparted resize an active windows primary partition?

Yep, it doesn't boot up Windows(you just burn it to a CD and boot from that), so it has no trouble working on "active" Windows partitions

Hey can someone explain how to use gparted? I downloaded the latest LiveCD iso and burnt it to a disc. Restared my laptop and booted the liveCD. After I got to the main menu, select default settings and select the language it goes and does nothing for 10 mins+ Should I just leave it on the blank screen for a while until something comes up? Does it take a long time?

If gparted isnt working for use just download ubuntu 8.04.

Install gparted using either synaptics or apt and use it that way.

Okay I got the same error on gparted (when i got it to boot) and ubuntu. It just says error occured during this operation. In gparted, I select my Primary partition and I drag it out using up my unallocated space, but then when I click apply it tries to do it but then I get that error:mad:

OK Now I've successfully partitoned the drive using Gparted but now windows wont boot. It says a recent hardware/software may have caused this.

So I put in my XP installation disc and go to the recovery console. Then it asks me for my admin password. Is this the same password that you use at the welcome screen? Because I entered that and it is invalid! Could I use Ophcrack to get the password?

    Can anyone help? Thanks

Nope, admin password is usually different (usually blank actually). Give it a lash.

Tried that and a ton of other passwords before going mental, giving up and formatting the partition. Then I re-installed Windows. So my current situation is:
    • 2 Partitions
    • 1 is XP. The other is an extended partition for documents, program files, music etc
    .

Now my firefox, itunes, evernote etc. is on the data partition. How can I get those to show up in Start menu? Will I have to reinstall them?

Yes unless you can do a complete hard-drive backup. Using Acronis True Image (I'd recommend this one) or Nortons Ghost. This because most applications and games install files all over the place within the Windows directory as well as the main c:\program files directory.
