    Hey,
I know it's a slight bit early to be thinking about a course next year, but i was just wondering is the course in software development in carlow it any good and do you do c++ and stuff like that.
The course page on the carlow it website says it's a new course and there's no points listing there, but i know last year my bro was lookin at that course and it said it was new back then too. I don't know what to think but if you could "enlighten" ;) me it'd be great.
    thanks

i know the programming course can be "fun" in places, but overall is quite good,
    C++
    Java
    VB
    etc etc
all the languages are covered at carlow I.T. i thonk i'm right in saying

The first year of the course is very general with the language being Java and some HTML near the end if I remember correctly.

In second year you continue with Java and do some Visual Basic and Assembly.

That's as far as my experience goes but I think in third year you start to do C++.

Overall the course is good if you're interested in it, but you'll have to be interested in it because if you're not you'll find yourself lagging behind.
You'll pass fine doing the minimal but Programming is something that requires time and practice to be good at.

If you still have a year of school to go I'd say research Software Development and see if it's something you want to do. It's not for everyone, me included!

They teach C# in the games course don't they. That being a type of software development.

Also I think it's points have dropped considerably too.

They did last year so we could use microsoft's game development tool XNA. Not sure if it'll remain part of the course but it was pretty easy to learn

    Ah first year..
We really only started in C, we used a C++ compiler but we didn't get into any of the C++ stuff till second year

first year=this is a computer, this is how you turn on said computer, this is a program, this is how you launch said program.
i am not doing a computer course but my friends are now 3rd and 4th year programmers. i have looked at their 1st year papers, without ever sitting a lecture i could of sat them and passed, most of them anyway!

You'd pass Comp Architecture too if you knew enough about computers from experience. Not a chance of passing Maths or Programming though without knowing any of the subject matter.

If you did honours maths then maths in 1st year games is a piece of cake.

Programming wouldn't be that feasible and computer graphics was just picky as hell. but depending on your strengths, you could def pass a few of our first year modules if you're lucky

    i could!

So would you be able to go get a job after the course that includes using one of the programming languages and have a good understanding of it?

i would trust a carlow i.t. taught programmer, over any other, especially vs, university as i.t. taught students will definitely have a hold on it as the lecturers in carlow will not let you on unless you actually understand the subject, at least most of the lecturers...

Amen thats how my time there was, I swear its not wonder the tech industry think Irish Grads are bad, look at the college course we all did!

The only thing you had to try and pass was maths, and the Ca used to pass us on that alone!

Honestly 1st year Software Development in Carlow is not too tough. If you go to the classes just try and understand what you're being told, and make a bit of an effort, you'll scrape a pass at the very least. Ya may or may not have to do extra work to understand some programming related concepts.

I'm unsure exactly which Software Development course you're on about, I can think of four.

As for C++ in first year, god I would of loved that, I had to put up with bloody turbo pascal. :-(
