    Hi guys,

My main problem is that i want to take night shots but i cant, its seems like the camera wont let me or something. I have looked for tutorials and tips on the net but i cant find anything useful in helping me overcome the problem.

    Can anybody help???

If you have the settings on automatic, it probably won't like night photography much. You'll need to change it to Aperture priority or Shutter priority (or various other things, but if you're new at this we'll leave it at the basics :) ). I'm trying to find a picture showing the dial on the Sony, but those are probably marked A and S, or Ap and Sp, for example.

Can you link us to a few pictures on the web of the kind of thing you'd like to do, as it will be easier to give advice if we have a better idea of what you want? When you say night shots I'm thinking of something like this.

Take a look at this thread too and shout if any of the jargon is confusing!

Without knowing what you're planning on shooting and how much light is around its difficult to give advise.

    Try this for starters:
1 - Use tripod or use a stable platform like a wall
2 - Put camera in Manual mode
3 - Increase light sensitivity by upping ISO - try 800
4 - Set the shutter on time delay - 2sec.
5 - Shutter speed needs to be very slow (depending on the light available), may need to get into seconds (will show as 1" or 2" and so on)
6 - Watch the light meter, you're trying to get the bar at 0, keep adjusting the shutter speed until its at 0.
7 - Press the shutter and step back from the camera so there's no vibration, then check you're results.

This is a guideline to get you going, you'll need to try different settings to get what's right for your suitation. If you need any help setting any of the above, post back again and I'll try and help. I've an alpha100 but I think most of the settings are similar.

    Good luck!

Hi,cheers fro the replies,i understand what the settings and how changing will or should affect the shot,The shots im trying to take are basically buildings from a distance, last night i tried taking a shot of sligo town from rossespoint and i managed to get one shot to work.

It feels like i am fighting with the camera and its not doing what i ask,it just wont take the picture for me,and ive played with shutter speed, iso, fliked through settings like shutter, aperture etc... but its not doing what i ask

im guessing its something very simple im doing wrong. Still need help.

You're gonna have to post your results and maybe link to something on flickr which captures what you're after.

Plug for Sligo Camera Club:) since you're in this neck of the woods.

Come along to our next meeting next Tuesday (16th September), we're having a 'getting to know your camera' session. This will give you a chance to ask some questions and get some advice in a friendly environment! We hope to have it as hands-on as possible and not blind you with science (or baffle you with bull).

    Website and directions here

    PS bring your camera along!

I don't know where that is (*runs to Google maps*), aha, but google tells me that Rosses Point is about 5 miles from Sligo. So, if you have autofocussing turned on, it's possible that with the various settings you've selected, the camera can't autofocus, and is refusing to take a picture.

Two possible solutions - switch your lens to manual focus if it has that option.

If not, try filling the viewfinder with something that it will focus on, half press the button, then compose your shot, then finish pressing the button and see if that helps?
