I have one similar. Go for it - You're not missing out on anything by paying an extra 40 for the Canon name on it.

    It's just a button with a lock :)

I have one of these as well. As fajitas says, it's just a button with a lock. A very simple piece of equipment. You could actually make one yourself with a few bits and bobs at home. Don't pay canons ridiculous prices.

Thanks, I was thinking the same thing myself, I will definitely go for it!

Now going mad altogether and found wireless models, anybody any experience on these!

Does it only work from on front of the camera though?

I made one myself for a grand total of €6.31 :)

If you're anyway au fait with a soldering iron then it's simple to do. Mine has two buttons (focus and shutter) and one switch for long exposures (bulb)

    Don't think so....it has a 100m range. Don't think it's transmitting from the front.

mmm....I don't think so....I'm dangerous enough with a clothes iron...god knows what damage I would do with a soldering one!!:D

Managed to ruin the infinity curve of my light tent with the clothes iron. :(

Also bought two cheap remote releases from Kea and have had no problems with them. Bar that I lost one. :(:(

The camera's wireless picker-uper is located at the front, so the signal must be picked up from there.

You can achieve this [like a TV], by pointing to a wall and it will bounce off it etc, but if in the open you need to direct it

I have a cheap ebay remote trigger and it works fine and had no trouble with it.

I have also tried a remote control (for 300d) and it worked fine.

As Fajitas said, you'll pay extra for the canon brand.

Calumet radio releases dont need line of sight and are good for around 150ft, they also are two stage so autofocus still works on the camera. Only cost around £35 too

I had a simple 1 button remote for my 20D and when I upgraded to the 40D, I purchased one of these:
    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/164271-REG/Canon_2477A002_Timer_Remote_Controller_TC_80N3.html

It's one of the best little pieces of equipment I have for my camera. It can be used as a regular remote shutter release at the push of a button. But where it is excellent is it allows you to set the number of frames to take, set the interval between the frames, set the time lag before taking the first frame ... and more!
For example, you can very easily setup this remote to tell you camera to wait 23 seconds, then take 10 photos with a 2 second interval between photos!

The most common use I have for it is putting the camera on a tripod and composing a shot I want to be in (e.g. a group shot). I set the remote to take 5 photos 1 second apart in 20 seconds time. This give me plenty of time to get into the group shot and have 5 shots taken of us at 1 second intervals. This way you are almost guaranteed to get the shot you want where everyone is looking at the camera ... etc.

Another use for it is something like this:

Thanks for all your advice guys.

In the end I decided to go for a wireless version.

Here is the link to it.

Costing me €25, so it's no major deal, interested to see how it works out.

Looked at the timer option as well , but decided to go for wireless.
A cheaper non Canon timer remote is also available on E-bay.

Definitely find that Canon are a rip-off for these small accessories.
