Access to broadband and new technologies must be made available to all communities, both urban and rural, according to a Fianna Fáil MEP.

Sean O'Neachtain has said if it does not exist in certain parts of the country, it will be very difficult for those areas to attract inward investment.

He maintains the EU and national governments across member states must ensure the regulatory framework is in place so telecom operators can compete.

He has said it is very important that certain initiatives such as the Global Crossing project be pursued so countries such as Ireland can be brought to the next stage of international connectivity.

"Broadband is now even more necessary than phone lines and post," he said
