Lads, has anyone of you ever used a Browning BLR for hunting ? I'm kind of looking to get into deer hunting and in a way it looks like an ideal rifle for it.

My line of thinking was as follows Sika : the area where I'm in is fairly flat with dots of forrestry and plenty of grazing and tillage land and it's getting to the stage of being quite well populated with reds and I've also seen a couple of hybrids. As there won't be many if not to say no long distance shots I was thinking of a BLR in .243. I suppose Browning being what they are this thing should be plenty accurate to about 200-250 yards and if needs be maybe even a bit further. I know it's not going to win any long range target competitions but that's not what I'm after anyway.

As for sourcing one I reckon I'll have a word with the gun dealer in Navan or Kells and if they can't source it I'll have to import from Belgium where the old man has few gun dealers among his shooting buddies. At the end of the day if you can't get a particular Browning over there where would you get it ?

for reds id go for something a bit bigger myself
    7mm-08 or 308 rather then the 243
i am also interested in getting a lever action rifle for culling as i have a very inclosed forestry to cull deer out of and the max shot would be 50yds
and i would have to be a quick shot also.

    Sika

A Marlin Lever Model 336 in 30-30 or .35 Remington. The the 30.30 cal. proven whitetail deer gun in the States. It will take deer cleanely up to a 250 lb at 100-150 yards with a 170 grain bullet and it gives light felt recoil to the shooters upper torso. The .30.30 cartridge is what the 7.62x39 is compared to ballistically most of the time.
A .35 will definetly do the job on big deer. A 200 grain, .35 caliber, round-nosed bullet at 2100 fps offers a very useful combination of hard-hitting. knock down "thump", and deep penetration, from a fast handling rifle, with tolerable levels of felt recoil.

You could also go a Remmy Woodsmaster in semi auto or pump. They go in Cal from 243 up to 30.06.they are pretty cheap 2nd hand,5 shot mag,or seen 10/15 shot mags for them as well if you need it for culling.
