With the new facial recognition sw for Picasa is it worth it to switch? I like the idea of having all mac apps and the connection between them but facial recognition would save a lot of time!

Well that was easy, ya not sure about iphoto yet, it keeps about 3 copies of each picture! Not quite used to the events thing either. The link with the iphone is handy though!

It keeps the original and the alterations to it. That way you can revert to the original at any time. For free software it works quite well I think. If you need more control then Aperture is terrific ! Otherwise there's Lightroom (that costs) or Photoshop Elements.

I feel like being pedantic here: iPhoto isn't free software, it's part of iLife, which costs somewhere in the region of €70, and just happens to come preinstalled on new Macs :p

Strictly speaking it isn't free I suppose but if you buy a Mac it comes pre-installed with the whole iLife suite so it's not like you need to consider it a purchase while buying a computer.

That aside, iPhoto is still an excellent easy to use application with good support for the major RAW formats and a decent range of fix and editing tools for the user type it's aimed at.

I use the GIMP to do most of my image processing, but I keep my 'photos for show' in iPhoto... because it integrates with iTunes, Frontrow, my iPhone and Apple TV.

You can install the picasa helper into iPhoto, which lets you directly put an iPhoto album up on Picasa. It's downloadable from Picasaweb.
