40D is a bigger camera anyway and yeah, I would say it's easier to hold IMO.

One of the biggest surprises to me was how far superior the grip and size of the 40D was compared to both the 400D and the 450D.

I have a 40d grip on its way from ebay right now. It should be here in a few days and when I get it I'll try and describe what it feels like!

You should have waited a few weeks. The 50d is out next month so the 40D should come down in price.

I really wonder about this as I'm not so sure if the 50D is really a 40D replacement but just the start of a new line!

I have a 40D and got a battery grip this week. I upgraded to the 40D from a 350D with a battery grip. The 40D on its own was a huge improvement over the basic 350D. It was smaller than the 350D + grip but still fitted nicely into my hand and a good weight. Even so I wanted the grip for the extra battery life and better handling. Now that I have it if anything the grip almost makes the camera too big and heavy, it will take some getting used to, the instant "this is much better" impact of a grip on a 350D isnt there. I'm sure I will get used to it, but I think I'll leave it off the camera more than I did with the 350D.

On the plus side I got the canon BG-E2N for the 40D, with the 350D I had a third party grip. The Canon one allows me to use the camera with only one battery installed. I had bought a battery with the grip and only later realised I didnt need it to make the grip work. Handy, especially since I actually have a third battery on loan to a friend on holidays so when I'm using the camera and the two batteries drain I can just swap in the spare battery and not have to remove the grip like I had to with the 350D. Maybe other grips for 350Ds or 40Ds work like this as well but I was pleased with what was a new feature to me.

I have the same issue. I use both cameras for work, the 350d and grip have a permanently mounted Sigma 10-20, and it's comfortable, not too heavy, not too light, but the 40d is like a concrete block with the grip, and an IS 17-85 on board. Having said that, I do think it makes the camera feel more professional (I know it's silly), and the additional shooting time between charges is great for Holidays. I just wish I could get over the weight.

For the record, I bought my 40d in Ireland, in Dixons. €1200 with the 17-85, got it for €1k with a discount from a club I'm in that has an agreement with Dixons, my employer paid for half, and I got a 200 Euro rebate from Canon. All good, so it ended up costing me 300 squid! :pac:

Unreal what's the 200 euro rebate?

There was a 200 Euro rebate from Canon Ireland on the 40d with the 17-85 lens. I thought it was much less (Circa 60 Euro), but when I filled in the details on the Canon website, it told me I was entitled to 200. Who was I to argue!
