To aovid having to keep using my old tv I would like to know if I should get component cables to hook the ps2 up to the hdtv?

This will improve the pic a bit? Or should I stick with SCART?

    Thanks in advance.

wont make a difference, just hook up the scart.

One thing to note tho, your ps2 games will actually look worse on a hdtv unfortunately not better as the resolution will be higher on your new tv you'll be able to see all the pixels in the game. but it depends on how close and how large the tv is for if you notice it badly or not

The PS2 comes with a composite cable, not even proper scart... upgrading to component will definitely be an improvement.

Oh and my PS2 cam with a 3 pronged connection which I had to put into a SCART converter thing. But I thought Component was 5 connections, not 3?

Thanks lads. Final question. My dvd player supports progressive scan (component). Is that the same cable as discussed above?

I wouldn't think that there is any upscaling feature in the PS2 but I wouldn't think that the games would look worse than a regular TV. I play alot of PS2 games through the PS3 on a 46" HDTV. They look fine but they are all bordered (maybe they are like that on a SDTV, not sure).

If you use the composite cable that came with the PS3 then your games are going to look dreadful. To get the best possible picture from the PS2 you should get a proper scart cable which will give you the best possible picture. It will still look a little worse but a lot better than composite. You could get the component cable for the PS2 but you'll only end up with a scart signal anyway. A few games do support 480p progressive scan through component but they are very few and most are obscure so it's not really worth it.

Cheers. Again, everything I have ever read on it says that the component>Scart though?
Even if progressive scan is not supported.

Anyway, what about for my dvd player? Does a component lead for that have 5 connections on each end?

Component is better than scart but only if you are getting a HD signal. It's the same signal if you are getting a standard def signal.

As for your DVD player again it's not worth getting component over scart unless it supports upscaling to HD resolution where it would be well worth getting.

Yeah supports progressive scan (the dvd player).

just use the scart for both, you would be wasting money buying the components as neither support hd signals. you can buy relatively cheap dvd players that upscale these days in places like aldi.
Have you got your new tv picked out? if not then what size were you thinking about and how much are you looking to spend? also are you looking to just use it for ps2 and dvd or will you watch tv on it and will you be getting a 360 or ps3 in the future?

Feel free to pm me with any questions regarding hdtv if you want, Ive bought and helped buy many different models in the past few years and Ive saved a few people alot of money before when they were going to buy something "too good" for there needs.

Just one other thing, if you are going to use scart, then a more expensive scart will give you a better signal. if you decide to get a dvd player that upscales then you'd use a hd lead and it wont matter how much it costs as the signal is the same and isnt affected by outside noise, so get a cheap one of them.
